Big Pig Down

I went pig hunting this weekend. We came across some pigs on a bluff above a dry creek bottom. The pigs were holed up in a brush patch about 70 yards by 30 yards. The only way to get at them was to start crawling on my stomach though the tunnels (slowly). It took about 45 minutes to get myself in the right position without them detecting me. I shot one at about 12 yards away with my 30-06 ( my 357 Mag was laying right next to me just in case). That will get the hart going!! It took about another 45 miute to get it out of the brush. We had to cut a trail so the pig would not get hung up and so we could standup to drag it out. I knew it was a big pig when I shot it. It weighed out at 334 lbs. By the way the two Bob Doziers knives made skinning
a breeze.

It weighed out at 334 lbs! Is that a typical pig? I have always wanted to hunt a pig with a knife, now I am not so sure ;). How big are the tusks on a pig that size? Take it easy,

Matthew

Longrifle,

The average Pig runs between 80-260 lbs. This was on the larger side.

Pigs have been taken up to 650 lbs on the rare occation.

I doubt I will ever try to take a pig with a knife, especially a large Russian Boar like this. They can be very aggressive & dangerous.

I will aproach a wild boar with a knife only if there are a dozen of molosses dogs attached to it :D
If you did domestic pigs you will agree with me, it takes two men who know what they are doing, a rope "lasso" and a good long knife for a 250-500lbs pig. You must know what part of the neck to stab too. I suspect a wild pig is three times stronger and fitter than a domestic fat pig.

I've never field dressed a pig. Is that weight with or without the guts? Your a better man than me if you got that big pig out of the woods!

Take a look <a href="http://www.a-wild-boar-hog-hunting-florida-guide-service.com/knife-hunting.htm">here</a>.

DanielL,

It weighed just over 300# when we weighed it after it was gutted. I figuered the guts weighed about 10% of the total weight. Thats how I came up with the final total weight.

So, backpacker, are you going to butcher and stock the freezer or dig a pit and BBQ the whole thing at once. I'll bring the beer! :D

I like pig hunting, however you wouldn't see me shoot a European Wild Boar from the prone in a thicket. The thought has my sphinter going. A resent story ran that a European rifle on a shoot was unzipped from the front leg, around the back and all the way up to the shoulder. Having recovered he looked as if he had a wet suit style full body zipper.

Steve Filicietti is into Bush pigs in Austalia (is that how one should put it?); he also makes some fantastic knives for the job. www.unitedbladeworx.com.au forge1@powerup.com Unfortunately, he was saying that these pigs are unpalatable due to amount of carrion they eat. :barf:

Domestic pigs weight out dressed at 2/3 their original body weight. So your pig was likely much larger than you estimated. It was likely between 400-450#, standing weight.

Good job!

Coyotlviejo, most wild animals are much leaner than domestic animals. As a general rule, animals weigh about 2 time their dressed out weight.

Greenjacket, I was a scared. That's why it took 45 minutes to get into a good position. At one point I was inside the brush tunnel system and the pigs (plural)were behind a bush I could not see through, approx. 7 to 10 feet in front of me. I decided to back out because to get a shot I would have had to go around this extra thick bush and the pigs would have been at point blank range.

mnblade, the butcher has the pig. There will be many good breakfast's this spring & summer.
