As my name entitles, im more of a Bali-Song kind of guy, but ive been wondering ever since i read that Spyderco was the first "manufacturer" to come out with the pocket clip on a knife, did they get the idea from a knife maker, does anyone who really put the first clip on a knife? because U.S. Patent 1769093 says Frederick Wuesthoff from 1929 invented it. Just my passion for knives gettin to me.
Thank you for reading this

Hmmm, that is an interesting question. I'm not really sure who put the first clip on a knife, but I had heard that Spyderco patented it first. You might want to ask in the Spyderco subforum if you haven't already; Sal visits there pretty regularly.

this one looks like it could possibly pre-date spyderco.?

I don't have any examples to back my theory up, but I believe that with as long as knives have been around, someone, somewhere, in some way put a clip/wire/ect, on a knife for that purpose. It might not have popular enough back in the day for a knife company to put one on, but I imagine there were a few people on earth that used a clip before Spyderco.

At the knife shows I have seen WWI1 German knives with pocket clips. I have one around hear somewhere. I will look it up
and see what brand it is but I believe it is a Puma.

FWIW, some percussion pistols had large hooks, for carrying on a belt. So the idea has been around for centuries, but when it was applied to knives, that's a good question.

I thought Spyderco's main claim top fame was the thumb hole? You learn something new every day.

thx - cpr

yeah, the patent for this knife clip was 1929, and Frederick W. is not a familiar name with me, but spyderco started around 1978 or so right? and craftsman has been around since 1927 so yeah, they would have been around when the patent by Frederick came out.
