Have only had this model (403) since May 20th so I can't say I've really wrung it out yet, but thought I'd mention a few impressions I'd had so far. First of all, this is a pretty knife and a pretty different sort of design (in my experience) to come from Buck. This is a knife that seems to combine the aspects of both production and handmade pieces. I think that the basic shape of the blade would define it as a "hunter/skinner", but it also leans heavily towards an all purpose blade. The upswept blade worked really well disjointing and preparing whole chicken(s) for the BBQ and for gutting and scaling fish ( of course, not as many fish as we would have liked, but that's another story). I have also, to date, just for the heck of it, split some small pieces of firewood for kindling with it( used another piece of wood to drive it thru), took a piece of heavy duty shipping cardboard and sliced it into 1" strips that were about 8" long each (50 times) without taking the edge off significantly(did need a touch up on the ceramic sticks after the fish). The design of the blade is pretty well thought out, I think, with a slight depression accented with grooves set into the top just in front of the handle. This works out really well for control while cutting either blade up or down. There is also a pronounced choil that works well with this feature. The handle feels a bit fat for my taste, but so far it hasn't caused any problems, just feels a bit big for a knife this size. As noted, the edge holding has been very good so far, I'll push it a bit more w/o touch up in the next week or so and see what happens. My problem is, I constantly keep a razor edge on all my knives and it's hard to let one get really dull!!
By the way, the sheath has a feature that Ive not tried before in this type of knife; it's got a clip on the back. At first I was a bit dubious, but it rides very well and can be carried on shorts, jeans, sweats, w/o a belt. Of course, that is something a SoCal person would really appreciate !
Ok, it's getting late for me, will post more after next weekend warrior foray.

Got my first 403 today.
I like it better than the B694 Walnut in blade profile and choil. Wish it had the roughed out hilt section like on the Alpha.
Can't stand the clip sheath. If it wasn't for that, it would be in my EDC rotation.

...That 403 appears to be very "handle heavy" goose...Even with that area that's been opened up to accomodate some of the handle it looks like it would still jump outa the sheath at the slightest movement without that clip...Nice lines and wood though...Glad I'm not into "fixed blades"...LOL...:p

My thought is that this knife would be better served with a rubber handle for a better grip and perhaps less weight. It looks good as a utility fixed blade.

I like the looks of the 403. But.....mine are for looken at not for use. I never even noticed the clip on the sheath!!!!! whats that all about???? I had to go dig them out of the safe for the photo op :) . How about you guys post a pic or two of yours ;) .

I dont have one of these, but my dad does. I think it is a very nice knife! I love the wood handles and wouldnt really want it with a rubber handle. I also do not care for the clip sheath either :D I never really compared it to my 694 I'll have to look into that!! :D

I've had mine since they first came. The sheath while I was apprehesive about it works very well in practice. I carry mine all hunting season and have dressed, skinned and deboned close to a dozen deer with this knife. I also have used it to cut shooting lanes and brush for cover. The poly on the handle started flaking so I stripped it and shellaced it with some amber shellac that I had from redoing a Mosin Nagant. The sheath finally gave way on the botton, but I put in a brass rivet and it was good to go. I have also been working on a puch sheath. It is 75% done.

I really like this knife.

Hey Jeff...
I like the fit in da mitt quite well.
Interesting cause when I look at the Alpha, it is curved along the spine and one would think that would offer a better feel.
But, for me, the straight spine on the 403 is fine, the choil and spine thumb dperession are fit prefectly for my hand.
My next quest is to find a sheath that will work with this puppy so I can EDC it.

Pinetree...thanks for the report. Sounds like you use your 403 quite a bit. I really do like it and will figure something out regarding the sheath. I am concerned that it will un-clip while I'm riding or falling off a bar stool. Instead of wearing my EDC 119BR today, maybe I'll try out the 403.

LoneRanger...there are a handful on a famous auction site right now. Search for "Buck 403".

Darryl...It doesn't feel as top heavy as it looks...though it is a bit. The balance point of it on the finger is about the same relative to the 119BR (about 3/4 down the handle) but a 119 Black Phenolic is dead center at the guard for me.

When were these 403 knives produced? Mine does not have a date tang stamp but the box is marked "06-02-03".

hi does anyone know where i can purchase a 403 no cutout on the blade at a resonable price?

Online auctions or websites is my best guess. This one's been discontinued for awhile.
They are still around though. I think I will stick with my Alpha hunters and 119's etc....etc.... :D

I have never had the sheath fall off. I do find myself checking for it when wading through dense vegetation. But it has always been a concern. I thought about using a leather lace attaced to a small carabiner. I value how easy on and off the knife is...

Someone toss up a pic of a 403 with a 110 for comparison.
and maybe a 471 in the mix
