In the latest issue of Blade(Sept 2000), there is an interesting article on the "Big Stomp Rolling Mill", by Hugh McDonald. Does anyone have an E-mail address for Mr. McDonald? The article is well written, and I would like to get more information if possible. Thanks

Rick

I don't have an address but grandpa Miers was in contact with him and they were talking about it at www.swordforum.com Looks like it is a pretty simple machine to put together, much less complex than building a hammer or press. The article does give his address and phone number at the bottom of the article.

That does look like an interesting article, I only skimmed it but it seems they are saying that rolling can refine the grain structure as well as forging. I'd like to hear what some of the experienced bladesmiths have to say about that.
I can see where it would be useful for making an even weld in damascus production. -Guy Thomas

Guys, looks really simple to me geared down top roller, moving at 10' a min. bottom roller is hinged and forced against the top roller by a foot pedal,(adustment with a threaded rod for thickness) I'm thinking an old gearbox from some industial euipment or old truck transmission for the gearbox, Mount a v belt shiv on the input shaft of the tranny and a couple connector plates on the tailshaft. In the picture of the Mark II model the shaft looks as though it is mounted in bronze blocks. At 10'ft.a min. you wouldn't need ball bearings, unless you had them to begin with. I think all I need is a tranny for mine, I have most of the rest of the junk.
