happy knife day ! ( aug 24th is national knife day). this is a combination of ideas from the loveless big bear, chute knife, and steve johnson subhilt. i have owned and watched steve's sub-hilt video for years, and after making a few chute knives recently, i was compelled to try making something like this. it has a 7 3/4" blade made of 1084, and is 13" overall. ironwood handle and nickel hardware. pardon the reflections on the blade. thank you for taking a look.

That's absolutely stunning my friend!!!! Glad that you gave this a shot.....I see many more in your future. ;)

Yes, Happy Knife Day!!! :)

Beautiful package!

Well done for sure!

Nice job!

You can tell you put a ton of work into it.

Nice. Great piece of ironwood. That contrasting stuff with the light/dark bands is far more striking visually to me than the more sought after burl stuff.

Excellent finish on it too.

Very nice interpretation of styles. Looks great! Reminds me some of an extended Jess Horn boot knife blade. Fabulous wood, and I particularly like the pronounced curve in the subhilt guard.

The polish on the knives I see around here is amazing. Very nice blade my friend!

Are those brass pins in the guard and subhilt?

Imo, your handle contouring is not extreme enough, and gives it an ambiguous shape.

In addition, the tapering on the guard and subhilt would benefit from significant thinning.

Your selection of using carbon steel would put you off to the side of any contemporary maker working in the Loveless style.

thank you. yes STeven , they are brass. i like them to be visible and obvious they are pinned, rather than to have them disappear. i have a loveless fighter, riverside with a 6 1/2" blade. i measured the contours with calipers and copied them because i did not have anything else for a guide. personally i feel like i would like a narrower waist as well. i agree about the steel selection, it probably scares off most potential customers. at the moment i do not have the heat treating equipment for stainless. someday when i am more confident i may acquire it. i appreciate the comments.

Hi John,

Some Loveless knives exhibit exactly the contours we know he did and want, and some don't....they all varied as handmade things do, but it seems like a lot of the "ideal" proportioned ones got photographed, so there is always that to look towards.

Your coincidence should be quite high, you are making very good looking knives.....although I do disagree with you on the choice of brass pins.....if you want contrast, you could always use sterling silver or Argentium.

Best Regards,
