So I won a kit knife a little while back from forum member Combatjiujitsu. In the give away thread he posted a picture of the knife and today I received it.

Let me preface by saying that I had a terrible day at work. Especially toward the end, and knowing that the kit should be here soon, I spent a good portion of my free time daydreaming about how to approach the assembly of the knife. I'll document that in a separate thread, but here I wanted to share what all came in the box.

First is the blade. This is a blade ground by knife maker Gene Martin. It's made of D2 (joy!) and is heat treated to RC 58-59. Gene describes it as an "all around" knife. To me it looks kind of bushcrafty. It's dark from the heat treat, but it's just a light surface coating and will come off easily with sanding. It seems to be of very high quality!

The kit also came with blocks of wood for making scales. Guys, I wish you could see this stuff in person. It's highly figured and stabilized. I have no idea what it actually is, but it truly is gorgeous, shimmering as you turn it in your hand.

There's enough that I might be able to fashion a Light My Fire fire steel handle to accompany the knife. We'll see.

Perhaps the best part I saved for last. Gene's wife makes mosaic pins and lanyard tubes. I was aware that the kit came with some, but I didn't expect this much. Included is enough for at least 2 knives, maybe more, plus plenty left for accenting other knives handles. There are two complete sets. One in what looks like stainless outer tubing, and another set in brass outer tubing. I'm fairly certain some have carbon fiber rods. Check these out.

Ideally I would have taken these pics in the daylight, but I didn't want to wait. :D

Just wanted to give a shout out to Combatjiujitsu for the great gift. I've played knife maker for years, but really, this is where I should have started and I can't wait to dig in.

Thanks bud!

That is a very cool kit. Going to be an awesome knife.

Great looking kit you got there.

Look forward to seeing it come together.

Great stuff, looking forward to seeing the knife you build

Some nice curly maple there. Have fun putting this together!

Is that what it is? How sure are you? I would have guessed redwood, but it's not really burly. Definitely not my area of expertise.

I must amend the "easily sanded" thing btw... The black layer from heat treat comes off easily enough, but the tiny scratches are a bear! Who ever said that d2 was wear resistant? :p

Yeah, quilted maple I reckon.

Hope you have plenty of abrasives for blade clean up!! :p

Love those tubes. I'm still at the admiring-others'-work stage, but I keep bouncing back and forth between liking a fully-polished blade and one that's still grey and mottled above the grind.

^^ good shout sir. I always thought 'flamed' was 'quilted' if that makes sense. Those pictures REALLY shows the difference

I learnt a *lot* about fancy wood when I was putting together the order for the $5000 bass I had Sadowsky make me for my 40th birthday. It was a buy I could essentially make once in life, so I pored over fancy woods for months first. I ended up going for spalted maple for the top.

It's a really nice bass.

I really like what flamed maple looks like on a knife, as well.
