This knife was quite a project. Maybe Terry will fill us in with the details. Suffice it to say that from my end, it turned out great :D

He used 1084 for the blade after a disappointing run-in with a bad batch of 5160. He did a clay-backed hardening on it, which resulted in a very nice hamon (which was impossible to capture in the photographs). The "grinding" of this blade involved a few hours of draw filing. Terry also rounded the spine and added some nice filework. The handle is ironwood.

I don't have the dimensions handy right now but will try to add them later.

Holy crap, I love it!!!!

Come on Derrick, we wants da see that hamon! :D

Fantastic knife from a guy that seems to know a thing or two about making a knife ;) ;) ;)

Great job Terry!

Sweet Jumpin Junipers!

That is one seriously sweet bowie, from one of the nicest guys out there.

Oh, and I do know the story behind this one. I'll let Terry chime in here with his comments on how much work went into this one. :)

Nice. Big, very big, but nice. The handle looks gorgeous. I wish we had better pics of them.

So how big is it anyway? The top picture makes it look as large as a cutlass  . Awesome knife! I want more details!

I should point out that the wood isn't quite as fiery as it appears in the pics - you can blame poor lighting for that one.

I'll get complete stats on this one tonight.

I also want to mention just how light and quick this knife is. It's almost deceiving. The blade is long enough that I can make cool "swoosh" noises when I wave it around like a raving lunatic in my kitchen. :D

Here's a quick shot of it that I took before shipping it out. The photo is not very good, but you can see the color of the ironwood a little better.

As far as the story behind it, well, this was about the 3rd or 4th attempt. Originally I was going with 5160. I fell pray to the old problem of inclusions in the 5160 -- twice.

So I switched over to 1084. The first one, I didn't like, so I destroyed it and threw it away. On this one, I was having some trouble with my grinder and ended up draw filing it.

I figured the Lombardomeister would pipe in here with his comments. I knew you would love this one, Anthony. :)

Ya know.....!!!!???? :D

Ya know just how jealous you make me and all the rest of the guys here with tales of swingin' this badass piece around??!!

That's about as fine a bowie as I've seen from my friend Terry. You picked all the right stuff, Derrick. Terry, good on ya for such an outstanding piece. :)

I think I'll open up my safe to see if I can console myself now.... ;)

BIIIIG ! I really like that blade shape. Fisky camp knife style. I'd gone off fileworked spines but you've drawn me back in again. Jason.

Wulf,

I have said it before and it is worth repeating, you just have exceptional taste in knives  Between this one, the Knight and the latest Wheeler, these are three of the finest looking knives to grace the forum in quite some time. Just excellent.

BTW, would love to see a video clip of the knife "swooshing". Reminds me of the "jedi kid" and his light sabre! ;)

I'm inclined to say thanks, but I realize all the praise is due (and directed towrds) the fine craftsman who made this knife. Terry really deserves a lot of credit - this was no easy task. Terry never entered this in any contests, but it does need to be held and seen by others, so I'll be sure to bring it to next year's Blade show for everyone to admire.

Star Wars kid - cute, Jamie. :) But you're right :D

Anyway, I took measurements last night. Here's how it breaks down:

Blade: 11 1/4" long by 1 5/8" wide and ~3/16" thick
Handle and guard: 5 1/8", for an overall length of 16 3/6"

The balance point is just at or slightly in front of the plunge cut.

Now, one last pic:

Wulf... What Blademan said - it seems we do share similar tastes in blade styles and makers. I was lucky enough to hook up with Terry and scored a wonderful El Camino, and now I'd love to run into one of his larger blades (not literally!:D )to sorta match the El C... what a pair to be able to strut around with!

Nice score!

I'm there. Just let us know what table you'll be at. Amazing bowie Terry, and draw filing?! That's some pretty serious dedication, I wouldn't want to guess what your hands and fingers felt like after finishing up that blade.

very nice! though of course I would prefer it with black Micarta :) (not a surprise for those who know me, I'm sure)
