So here's the idea, tell us about a time when you were very excited for a knife, got it in your hands, and had your hopes crushed.

I want to know what THE most disappointing knife you've ever owned is and why. This isn't necessarily the WORST knife you've owned, just the one that didnt live up to expectation.

For me it's the bear grylls knife. I should have known better but friends were swearing by it. Those guys are no longer friends.

So, you stopped bring friends with some folks because they liked a product that you didn't? Hey brother, I'm right there with you. My wife didn't like the coffee at my favorite greasy spoon, so I divorced her on the spot. :D

On topic response, I got a SOG Seal Pup in, and just wasn't really impressed by it.

Hehe... In all honesty those guys are still great but there choice of knives just isn't.
I also own the seal pup, for me it wasn't a huge disappointment because I had such low hopes. I use it as a back-up camp blade.

ZT 350's. I had 2 of the LEs, a CB and a DLC'd ZDP. The handle was just too small and created a bad hotspot right in the middle of my little finger. It also felt too wide in the palm because it's so flat.

Spyderco Southard. Everything else was great about it and I really had high hopes. I suppose a thinner scale would have helped, but it was just too thick for a short-handled knife. I have smaller knives, but the thickness is commensurate with their size. I felt the same way about the Techno.

CRK Umnumzaan, hands down.

F&F were great but I find the ergos to be extremely lacking, the opening action was awkward and I hate to throw this in there, but yes, mine could not hold an edge to save its life.

WOW... CRK that's a surprise considering how many of us knife nuts drool over everything chris touches.

Same here, although I did put one through some good use in the garden. :D

Don't get me wrong, it's a very high quality knife with top shelf fit and finish.

However, that wasn't enough for me to overcome it's flaws and I ended up selling it after a month or so.

I've bought a few SOG's in my past, and you know that feeling, when you were a kid and got socks for Christmas? Yea...
Awww... That's a bit harsh. I've never really drooled over a sog but I do find their fixed blades surprisingly functional. They definitely weren't my most disappointing because I never had high hopes.

I usually won't buy a knife without holding it, and if that's not an option I will spend countless hours reading on it.

So far I love every knife.

But if I am disappointed in a knife, it would be my hogue ex02 because it developed blade play, has CHEAP black coating, and the markings painted on blade are uneven (logo etc), clip also creates hot spots.

My biggest disappointment was my S30V blur, I had a sandvik blur for awhile (ended up giving it away in one of the first pay it forward's) and then a little while later got an S30V one, now this was my first S30V blade so maybe that hype added to my disappointment but that knife really didn't do anything for me and the blade wasn't really any better at anything than the sandvik one was. I had also modded the crap out of my first one but I wasnt welling to do those mods to the 2x expensive version so I traded it in for credit at a local gun show.

The first CRK that I owned: Small Sebenza Insingo. Nothing about it impressed me. The action wasn't as smooth as my large Sebenzas or some of my cheaper knives. The edge retention was pretty bad on it too. Fit and finish is good, but nothing out of this world.

I'm going to get killed for this , but for me it was the Zt 560/561 tried about 5 or 6 of them , and I liked the design I guess , but everyone of them had some little problem that for the price was just unacceptable to me , I did finally get one that I could live with but I wasn't impressed with It's cutting ability so off she went too. I've been disappointed a lot but the 560 is the one off the top of my head.

Dpx hest folder. Sent it back 3 times for lock rock. Their customer service is great and they replaced it each time but it kept on developing the lock rock after a few days and I never even waved it out of my pocket. Ended up getting my money back. Also the benchmade 755 MPR. Awesome design and steel but once again plagued with lock rock issues.

My biggest disappointment has to be this big pack of knives I got for like $12. It was 75% off and I wasn't expecting anything other than gas station specials but they didn't even meet that. Most of them just had pinned pivots so there was no adjustment at all which was a real bitch because the ones that looked to be the cream of the crap all had a lot of bladeplay. There were a few neat keychain multitools in there but the rest were the kind you'd buy out of a bucket at a flea market. Oh well, didn't spend much on them anyway.
