For me I'd stop at the Spyderco Sage 1 or 2 is as the outside edge of my spectrum. (Frankly I'd be more comfortable with the Spyderco Caly 3.) Pocket friendliness is a must. Weight is an important consideration. Obviously, the bigger/heavier or smaller/lighter you are...tastes may differ.
So what IS the biggest folder you'd take to a formal? And since that may just be the all time best EDC for everywhere you might have to be...What's yours?

I just got a Spyderco Valloton Subhilt, and with it's shiny black polished G10 and smooth steel spacers, it's definitely dressy-looking. It just may be too big, though. Heck, I'd still carry it! I've also carried my Protech Godfather with black blade and handle, with smooth black carbon fiber inserts and a beautiful mother-of-pearl-inlaid button. The pearl button is like adding cufflinks to a tuxedo. Classy!

More likely, though, I'd probably carry my A. G. Russell's Gent's liner-lock with Ti bolsters and quince-burl handles in a horizontal leather sheath, or my William Henry GenTech with Ironwood and Citrine on the button lock and thumb stud, or a Kopa Goldlip pearl.

I think that the Caly 3 is a nice knife, but a bit large for a gent's knife.
The Chaparral might fit that role. A better fit might be something without a black handle,
like a Mcusta Take or another model.
A Moki model with a 3 3/4" handle and 2 3/4" blade might do.

One of the knives in my current EDC gear also qualifies as my largest gent's knife. It's an Al Mar Eagle; this one's from the 1980s.
It's large enough for everything I'll ask of a pocket knife, and sturdy as well, but it's long and slender and sleek.

(How many times can I post this photo in a month.... ;) )

For formal occasions I'd prefer a small folder, like the Fällkniven TK4. It's thin and light and even goes unnoticed in the pockets of my suit.
