You are invited to participate in the largest handmade knife auction in history.
This auction will be a live auction in Mesquite, Texas at the Hampton Inn Rodeo Arena on Wednesday, September 27, 2000. This is the Wednesday before the Spirit of Steel Knife Show opens on Thursday at the same location.
This is the total sale of a single collection from a private collector. He is in poor health, and the family has opted to pass the knives along to other collectors through our auction services. It is the finest handmade knife collection known to exist, highlighted by 26 R. W. Loveless knives including 3 Big Bear Bowies. D. E. Henry is represented with over 16 of his knives. There are over 83 Randall knives, with a large number with brown button sheaths, and many Heiser sheathed Randalls. Herman Schneider made a spiral fluted ivory handled Damascus art knife that is in this collection. Joe Kious made a Searles style dagger with gold wire and mounts. W. D. Pease has 16 fine folders, including some with mastadon ivory handles, gold pins and shields, and rubies on the top of the pins. There are Ron Lakes, Steve Hoels, a dozen Ben Shostles, 59 or so Jimmy Liles ranging from Lilelock folders to a magnificent ivory handled gold mounted Bowie fully engraved by Gary Blanchard. The list goes on and on for over 600 similar knives.
If you collect handmade knivesor ever considered ever buying a handmade
knife-- this is an auction you must attend.
A centerpiece of the collection is a historically important 1840 era Samuel Wragg massive presentation Bowie from T. D. Rice to Col. G. W. Long dated 1841 and original! The original sheath is still with the knife, and it is fully etched on both sides of the knife. The front side is etched Ol Kentucky. T. D. Rice was the originator of the minstrel show, and is a famous figure in the history of the American theater.
With all the high-end things there is also a small selection of lesser known makers, factory knives, and affordable knives that are typical of what collectors assemble when they are starting a collection before becoming advanced collectors.
This auction will offer several ways to review the catalog and to bid. The catalog is online now at http://www.jbrucevoyles.com, and we strongly recommend you go there to download your catalog FOR FREE! We are not printing a catalog per se, but will print out a fully illustrated computer-generated list for $40
.00 each.
If you have a subscription to our mail-auction catalogs this list is NOT considered a part of that subscription.
You may bid by being there, by leaving an UP TO absentee bid, or by phone (subject to availability). For the first time we will also be offering the option of bidding LIVE on the internet via LEFTBID (www.leftbid.com). You need to have registered there before the auction to bid via the internet. There is a 15% commission for internet bids. Live, absentee bids, and phone bids are subject to the standard 10% commission.
LEFTBID will show the auction in progress and bid for you live at the auction per your instructions.
If you are attending the auction the preview will be at 6 p.m. 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 26, and from 8 a.m. 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 27. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
The photographs for this auction were furnished by the family, who are retaining possession of the knives until the day of the auction, due to the desire to not disturb the owner, who is in poor health and whose room is very near the security room that holds the knives. Therefore we cannot offer detailed descriptions until Tuesday, September 26th, the day of the preview. We will be happy to accommodate more specific descriptions by phone on a pre-arranged basis only (well be doing this with cell phones and have limited personnel).
Any automatic knives in the collection will not be sold but will be removed from bidding prior to the sale.
We strongly recommend you attend if you can, and bid by the internet via LEFTBID if you cannot.
I hope to see you there.
