Before I go any further, I enjoy the show, but anytime they do something firearms related they ususaly screw something up. On tonights brand new episode, the lengendary Jamie Hynamen (spelling?) tried to fire off a standard 45 long colt round...with a fuse, the kind you light and run away, as in fireworks fuse. I couldn't believe it, but then again they are from California, home to millions of know it all-know nothings.

Sorry bro, no hate, except for the high horse, hollywood hills types.:D

  • That is not what "but then again they are from California, home to millions of know it all-know nothings" sounds like.
  • Exactly how large an area do you believe "the Hollywood Hills" encompasses? How many folks do you think live there?
  • And what does somebody living in "the Hollywood Hills" have to do with a show filmed in the San Francisco area?
As you can see, it is very easy to get facts confused. On the whole, I think mythbusters does a pretty fair job.

My kids love that show Myth Busters. They are actually learning some factoids from there, they like the physics lessons in it, and they are not even aware they are learning stuff that is taught in school.

They do things right more than they screw up. I would love to have their job. I would bet that a majority of people don't know a bullet is pretty inert unless it's in a sealed chamber.

Ok, a bullet is "inert" unless the primer is struck properly. I like the show, blah blah, blah, I was hoping more "gun" people would read this and understand how silly it was to try and ignite a modern, cased round of ammunition via fireworks fuse. Oh, and I understand Cali is a large state, with many worthwhile people so those who feel the need to take up for a landmass or the citizens who reside there can stop being such uptight trolls. :p

...and I live in Mississippi, a state within a region that is clowned on constantly by the rest of the nation. The south is the butt of a thousand jokes, and we all take it in stride, but (( how dare I say a cross word about california! That state has its head so far up its ass it's unreal! )) The gun laws in that state reflect a total ignorance on the subject, and a large portion of the people sit on imaginary perches and think they are better than the rest of us. I know it's true, been there, experienced it. I will say nor-cal is a little different.

(( Looks to me as if you don't take it in stride real well. ))

Sounds like a personal problem to me. I live in NW Florida, often referred to as Lower Alabama with high crime and ignorant people. So what? The people you refer to reside everywhere, not just in Ca. I know, I've lived and worked in over 20 states. They made a mistake, they admitted it, they fixed it. BFD, happens on Mythbusters all the time. No one is trolling, just having a friendly discussion.

That's their gig, to test myths. Of course some of them are silly.

And a bullet is relatively harmless unless fired out of the barrel of a gun but they can explode without the primer being struck, so I'd hardly call it inert. I got some family in the deep south too, ever seen your drunk of an Uncle Bubba throw bullets on a bonfire?

Luckily though, bullets don't have much inertia when blown up, yeah, you might get hit by some hot brass, but doubtful it would do much more than draw a little blood.

I imagine a properly drilled hole with a fuse inserted to touch the charge would set it off no problem.

You would think so but it does not work well. Since the powder burns pretty slow it has to build up pressure to actually push the bullet out of the shell. The hole for the fuse will release all the pressure and pretty much nothing happens. If you cook them off in a fire the primer in center fire or the brass in rim fire moves a whole lot quicker than the bullet does due to the weight ratio and will cause problems like you said. The worst I have seen was when loaded guns have cooked off in a fire. A semi, full auto or tubular magazine has good potential to cause major problems in that case. The less amount of containment the bullet has the lower potential for problems exist.

Black powder would do what they were looking for, but not too many of the smokeless powders will ignite properly with a fuse. Maybe the old Cordite?
