I was out at the shopping sight and looking at the 25" and 30" Sirupatis, and the thought came to mind "How do yall use these things?". Woulden't a 20" AK or a GRS suit the job better, or are these more of a "for fun" type of thing? Is there enough room for a 2 handed swing?

I am interested cause that is one big HONKEN KNIFE!

I understand that the Kobras are primarily weapons and light workers (I have a 20" Kobra). However I have no Sirupatis, which will eventually change.

The 20" Sirupati is as big as I personally would go, but then I'm 5'4" tall. ( Circumferentially is none of your business. :p )

Whomever bought the last 25" posted he's going to have to work out some to be ready to handle it. As for my 30" Sirupati I'm very serious about keeping it to swing to pull my back into alignment. I'm talking two hand use for a couple of minutes being literally therapeutic.

Think about the amount of momentum that makes it want to keep on going after it cuts thru what you swung it at. Not quite as bad as trying to stop a sledgehammer in mid-swing, but close. :o

A chainsaw may be safer to use. And lighter.:D

I sent my 25" Kobra to S.D., where there is room to swing it ;) It wasn't as "big" as it was loooong. AC has a sword Jones, so it resides with him now. I could crowd on both hands for a two handed swing, but he says no.

Then, I got my UBE. New definition of BIG  This is MASSIVE ! 18" OAL, 12" blade, from bolster to tip, and the spine is 1/2" thick at the bolster. Width is 1 9/16" at the bolster, widening out to 2" through the sweet spot. After a short session with the UBE, my Sifu feels like a fingernail file. :D

Greetings,
I have used lots o' different size, weight and length Khuks. I currently do have a 25" Sirupati under my bed. It is a powerful knife, not anywhere near as unweildy as a 30" Sirupati (sold that one...), but not quite as agile as a 25" Kobra. It can turn out a serious day's work, while tiring you some, but not ridiculously so. I have used it to irradicate a privet stand, as well as for some 6-8" tree felling. It performs flawlessly for these tasks, and the extra reach is really nice for limbing trees (ever been clothes-lined off of your lawn-mower?). If you are reasonable strong-armed, and want a real power-house, the 25" Sirupati is a good choice. I like it better than my 22" AK for lateral chopping, the AK still gets kudos for wood splitter though...
The only thing that I will say, is that it is good to get one with a reasonably long handle. Mine is a little on the short side for a knife of this length, and sometimes, I wish that 2-handing it were a little easier. I am about 185 pounds and 5'11" tall, and can handle it one-handed with light to moderate fatigue. It is not an all-day slasher like a 20" Kobra, but it makes short work of pretty big saplings (2-3" Diameter) and small trees.

Rob:eek:

Many thanks for input. There are some hosses out there who like the big, heavy knives. I remember this one fellow who ordered a 20 inch AK. Not enough. Ordered a 22 incher. Not enough. Finally ordered a 25 inch AK 3/4 inch thick. Enough.

I like knives with some "meat" to them. I had a 20" (believe it was) sirupati, and it just didn't feel right. Too light for its length.

I'm gonna get a GRS at some point.

Here is one for the GRS off of Uncle's shopping sight...lets see if I can get it to work.

ahhhh....ummmmmm...leave it to sombody who knows what they are doing...I will go back to surfing before I crash this sight.

My first HI khukuri was a 20" sirupati, and after some extensive trials I decided it was just a little too much knife for my 5'6"`frame. I dreamed of an 18-incher, though there wasn't such a thing in the catalog at the time, and Uncle obliged without my having to ask by letting me know he had one that a kami had made on spec. It was, and still is, my perfectly sized knife, although my YCS comes darned close. I have a GRS, one of the first made by Ganga Ram himself, but it's just too big for me - apparently 89-year-old blacksmiths have significantly more arm strength than 56-year-old office workers :)

Unk, I should probably take care of some of my pre-move expenses before I get a GRS...and that other bancharo, if it's still around when I've got the dinero.

Speaking of moving- I'm having a friend (an admin on TheFiringLine.com) build up a 4x4 for me to take to Alaska. Vehicle is a Samurai that's going for $500! Even after mods (and the trip to Utah to retrieve the vehicle! ) I should have less than 3K invested. I plan on having a clip installed to hold one of the bancharos! :)
