[Edit] This post is meant to be about getting evidence on bicycle (2 wheel peddle power, not motorcycles) thieves and turning it over to the police. I don't care about clothing, locks, or suggestions to bring it inside. So if you can contribute an electronic gadget, such as an alarm or a camera please post your suggestion (though the alarm mine was an interesting suggestion). [/Edit]

I have a lock, a very good lock, it has defeated bike thieves on a number of occasions. The problem is that it doesn't stop vandalism. The last three times the bike thieves have hit my apartment building they have stolen other bikes in the rack and when they could not steal mine they vandalized it (kind of a fuck you for not letting us steal your bike). Mostly they have just broken the plastic mount points for my bike lights or broken the fenders (thankfully no slashed* or bent tires or frames, yet). I know I could bring the bike inside my apartment but I live on the third floor and have no elevator so it is a pain to haul the bike up to the apartment (I do it in the winter time so it is not impossible just annoying). I want to catch these fuckers so I'm looking for suggestions for bike alarms (probably not that useful) or some kind of wireless video camera that works at night and hooks up to my computer. This is probably a long shot or hideously expensive.

I'd wait out of site in a lawn chair (there is a nice big dumpster to hide behind) but it happens at night when I like to sleep and it is getting rather cold here, not to mention it happens only once every few weeks. Also the law here tends to frown on vigilantly actions.

* Thieves and toughs not carrying knives, yet they carry bolt cutters, I can't figure that one out either.

You already use the best protection part of the year, man up and carry it upstairs year-round. Think of it as more training for hills, etc.

Look at baby monitors. There a lot of wireless video baby monitors that are inexpensive and can transmit a hundered or two feet. a little duck tape to mount it and there you go.

Buy a bike Cover and if you have quick release take off your front wheel and lock the front wheel/back wheel/frame with your lock then put the cover over it and put it somewhere. They can steal it but theyll never have a useable bike.

I wouldn't leave a bicycle outside. Even if they can't steal the entire bike, there are lots of parts that can be removed. Reminds me of a bike I saw downtown Chicago one time, nothing but a frame chained to a street sign. No seat, wheels, chain, crank, or handlebars, just a frame.

Yeah. I would have suggested bringing it inside too but he said he didnt want to. Can't put it in your car?Or leave it inside of the building youre in and just lock it up like i said so people in there cant mess with it?

its actually not good for your bike to be outside... to be honest i see a lot of bikes come into the shop. And i dread working on them. The ones that have been left outside to be specific. I remember one bike i had to pull out the bottom bracket and seat post to drain out all the water left in there by rain. Not only that but rusty chains dont shift well. Neither do cables that have gotten wet.

This is not about protecting my bike (it cost maybe $100) this is about catching the thieves and/or giving evidence to the police.

So I've got a suggestion for a wireless baby monitor anything else?

get a deer cam, infrared camera that takes remote pictures via a motion detector,

I had a POS bike that got vandalized a couple of times, I hid a set rat trap in the buddy bag under the seat, that got me one thief.

I have no trouble either setting the bike up with a fence shocker and letting them grab it and get zapped....

Boiling oil . . . for onion rings. :D

In England they are called 'Alarm Mines'. It is a 12 gauge, black powder shell, but only and inch in length. There is a trip wire and a spring operated plunger (screwed down) that fires the shell. A friend of mine was having his garage broken into on a regular basis, until he used the two Alarm Mines that I got for him. After that final break in which triggered both 12 gauge black powder charges, one at floor level, one at waist level the thieves never came back! I bet they checked their nuts whilst running away. :)

Ironically, my friend set one off on himself!

That sounds like just the thing I'm looking for.

I'm not sure of the legality of such a device in Canada. Also due to the high traffic of the area (they have the trash bin beside the bike rack) and the other bikes stored in the rack (having the nice old lady set it off when she comes to get her bike, I can just see the police and bomb charges...). Still that is really an interesting device, might be of some use at my parents cottage.

In addition to the camera, you could dust your bike with silver nitrate, so the perps stain themselves indelibly purple.

And you could stick a GPS tracker under the seat.

Track them, film them, mark them... jail them. :)

Having just had my bike stolen on a really nice sunny day (yeah, I know, I'm in Seattle - sunny?), I decide to ride to work downtown and do a little work on the computer (I don't have one at home :o). I lock it up, just where I always do, in a bike rack in front of the downtown office building where I work. I walk inside, say Hi to the two security guards and go upstairs. A nice busy day, lots of Peds... didn't think nothing about it.

Two hours later I go back down to ride home... and the bike rack is empty...
I know - an oft repeated story across America...

Not much I can do... But here's what I really want to do:

A 12 ga. slug, inserted into the seatpost just below the saddle. A radio controlled detonator and a small Lojack locater inside the frame... Find my bike missing, tune into the lojack, and if the bike's moving... Well, I think y'all get the picture... :D

Unfortunately, I work for a Law Firm, so I am aware of the ramifications! :(

Otherwise, I can't tell ya anymore than to bring it inside with you EVERY time... :grumpy:

Alarm mine details and technical drawing here. I bought them from Henry Krank in the UK.

I like your style :)

I know BMW has a secondary alarm system somewhere on this page

http://www.bmw-riders-gear.com/Index.asp

It is called motion alarm.

I am not sure if it works only for Bimmers, but may be there are aftermarket systems for other bikes too.

Wrong kind of bike.

What I'm looking for is a way of getting evidence on bicycle thieves and turning it over to the police. I don't care about clothing, locks, or suggestions to bring it inside.
