Hey all,

I just ordered Bill Bagwell's book off Amazon. I believe it is a collection of articles he wrote for Soldier of Fortune magazine?

I'm hoping to learn quite a lot about bowies and such....

Anyone else here read it?

It is a very interesting book as he wisely reviews different types of knives and provides a great context for the Bowie knife. His approach is practical and from the stand point of the usefulness of a knife in different conditions. It believe this is a must read book. Mr. Bagwell truly knows his stuff, and is a man who has an extraordinary experience using knives.

It's a good read and has lots of information on design and carry.
Some parts of it are dated...

he talks about an up and coming bladesmith that shows a lot of promise
- I believe his name was Jerry Fisk :D

Great book a must have for any Bowie fan

He explains what makes a Bowie the most devastating combat knife in history and what a bowie needs to be a peoper fighting Bowie

As was mentioned he speaks of an up and coming Bladesmith Mr. Fisk and at the time of the writeing Jerry I believe sold a Bowie for around 350. The text maybe dated but it still rings true about the merits for a properly forged fighting bowie

Yep, 2010 marks Jerry's 30th year making knives.
So he would have been just starting out in the early 80's
when Bill was pening these articles.

Well worth the money--I got my copy off of eBay. I read the original articles as a HS student in the 80s. I love the Bagwell Hell's Belle Bowie look. As mentioned above, some of the articles are a bit dated, but still interesting. I'm currently working on an 18" Bowie patterned after the Hell's Belle.

Sounds like this is a "must" book for anyone interested in the
classic American knife the Bowie, and I know there are many!

Here is part of a randomly chosen review of the book on Amazon.com:

"...This is an excellent book for the uninitiated and a "must have"
book for the serious student of the Bowie knife.
Mr. Bagwell's knowledge of the history, proper construction and
use of the Bowie knife reflects an obvious lifetime of research and
application of that knowledge..."

All the best,

Yes indeed. I am really looking forward to this one.

Unfortunately good reading material on knives is quite thin on the ground and I cannot afford the magazines, they are sold for ridiculous prices in my neck of the woods.

Despite being both a heavy reader and a knife freak, my knife book collection stands at a single title (Greg Walker's Battle Blades) so this one will double it. :D
