Hi All,
I'm thingking about Bill Moran FeatherWeight as a general purpose/camping knife but don't know which of them to choose.
What is your experience with those.
Thanks a lot.
Ed

It's been my experience that the drop point is a bit handier for all around use while the more upswept blade is fantastic for skinning. I also have a strong preference towards the older ones with a full convex grind as opposed to the newer models.

Hope this helps!

Ed,
I think drop point is handier for general purpose and around the kitchen.

I far prefer the upswept blade for camping, the drop point is better for field dressing a deer...after that though I do use the upswept one for skinning

:) YIPPEE!

There is an old style convex, mirror finish Moran winging it's way to me today! I can't wait!

Excitedly, Jeff/1911.

Y'know, the drop-point Moran's always bothered me. The knife was designed as a trailing point by Bill-frickin'-Moran. But the market wanted a drop point. So Spyderco obliged. But the drop point version looks (from the photos) like it just has a bit more material added to "fill in" the hollow of the trailing point. The _edge_ and _point_placement_ seem identical.

They say "drop point's better for utility", but is that really the case when the edge and point are no different? Is it maybe just conventional wisdom that's misplaced here?

It seems _to_me_ that in this case the drop-point just adds more weight to the package...

I've got 'em both. BOTH are great knives. The curve of the edges, and the termination angle of the points, are different between the two. I did not like the upswept point of the original one, so I have since modified it to be shaped more like a straight blade (no upsweep). The modification resulted in it being shorter, with the point lower and more in line with where the dropped point is. It is (to me) an handier knife now. So, all that being said, I prefer the dropped point Moran. And perhaps more importantly, the handle on both are TERRIFIC!

Hopefully I didn't come across wrong. Just trying to be specific. :)

I prefer the drop point version. Mine is flat ground as thin as a kitchen knife and slices and dices like a mofo!
