Not the khukuris, the living treasure. Is he still around making more? Is he teaching to others or keeping secrets - how bout the 70 year old "boy"?

( And were you able to get the medallions in without too outrageous a tax? This really can wait til you're back, but if you don't tell me soon it'll be a loooong time I remember how long you kept me dangling. And not just my contributions but others. And pictures.

Hi Uncle Bill: --- Hey, did you hand over the pictures I sent? Also, can you give some status on what you think about the Ganga Ram khukuris? ----Another thing, a friend of mine retired from the SEAL's as a Master Chief and I am thinking of getting a khukuri for him, maybe an Ang Khola 15"er. World class khukuri for a world class guy!--- When you get back i'll send you the address. Give my best to everyone over there.

Ganga Ram ran out of gas. He was expecting to make a half dozen khukuris and we ended up getting orders for about 30. He left before I arrived and Bura has taken over the production of the Ganga Ram Specials. The khukuris that Bura is making are 95% faithful and excellent quality.

Khukuri FAQ

Bill,

Perhaps you could contract limited runs of khuks from talented kamis back in the hills. You could provide a short bio like was done for Ganga Ram, and then sell the khuks they made. They could even make them in their own shops.

It might not be a good idea to take orders, because you might burn out the kami, or not be able to fulfil the orders. But there are other old masters out there, and I bet some of them are hungry and would welcome the work.

I think you should make a clear distinction between a certain master's khukuris, and khukuris made following his style.

Namaste.

A "working khukhuri" from the Royal Kami that will be interesting. It will also be interesting to compare a khukuri made by Ganga Ram and Bura.

Does Bura put his name on his blades?

Is there any competition between Bura and Ganga Ram in the shop?

I hope Ganga Ram's stay at H.I. was enjoyable and profitable for him.

It might be well to send some supplies to Ganga Ram so that he might, if he desired, make one every month or so. His 70 year old "boy" should also be approached, I feel.

I too feel that those made by a master, and those ( although of equivalent quality ) made to that master's pattern, even by another master, should be *distinguished* from one another.

Although there is a national knife museum, what do THEY know from khukuris? I have a Salyan, a Chainpuri, Sanu's "Sun, Moon, and Stars" and another few that I would like to see on permanent display once I'm gone. A true Ganga Ram deserves to be in such a display. Bura's 27" Banspati belongs there too. A Ganga Ram produced by Bura I'm not sure of.It's wishful thinking, but a place to contribute our briefly held treasures that would let future generations marvel over them after we are gone would be very satisfying for me to contemplate. Perhaps John Powell could find out what was available? The British Royal Gurkha Rifle? Regimental Headquarters ?

Uncle Bill; --- Let us know what Bura has in mind for design for the Ganga Ram. (Specs)

Hello All:

Good ideas about village masters making a few khukuris and bringing them down to the shop. We will try to spread the word.

Ganga Ram signed the khukuris he made. Bura does not sign the blades. Steven F. noticed a difference in his first GRS and the second he got. The difference was Ganga made the first one and Bura made the second.

I've watched Bura work and I doubt that Ganga is a better kami. In fact, I doubt that there are any kamis in Nepal who are noticeable better than Bura. He is tops. When I watched him work and harden a blade it was obvious to me that he is a kami of exceedingly exceptional skill. Plus, he is a very bright little man.

More on this later.

Khukuri FAQ

Initially when I had ordered my GRS, I had ordered it partly as this would be a collector's piece by a master kami who might not be in this world much longer. Knowledge that Bura, a most capable master kami has taken over production of the GRS style khukuris, while initially a surprise, on more thought is something I like in that when I handle my GRS, I can not only see and feel Ganga Ram's design influence, but also Bura's great craftsmanship. One could say that I (and others) got to experience two master kamis for the price of one khukuri.

I look forward to seeing more collaborative efforts from the kamis.

Harry

I like Howard's idea about seeking out talented village kamis a whole lot, and would really like to see it pursued. It offers the potential of providing opportunities to get really unique pieces at affordable prices.

I should have added in my previous post that Howard's idea is a good one and I hope this can be made to come true.
