I recently was asked by a friend to help him pick out a knife to give to his best friend for a 40TH birthday gift.
I showed him a bunch of pictures of knives I had saved to my hard drive because I really liked their look. We also covered the fact that he had a 200.00 limit to spend on this gift.
The Billy Helton EDC was one I had saved because I wanted to buy one in the future and the picture keeps it fresh in my mind. Well my friend also liked it and asked me to help him see if there was one available for purchase.
There ended up being two of them that were ready for delivery. One in a beautiful random damascus and one in the lovely ladder pattern damascus. Both knives had Stabilized Armadillo hide for the handle slabs.
I decided that this was a sign that I should buy mine now also. I ordered both of them from Billy and two days later they were here.
I have to say that Billy Helton is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with on the internet and phone. He is a totally great gentleman and one of those down home people that I feel most comfortable with.
Well anyway, my EDC is the ladder pattern one.
It has 150 layer ladder pattern damascus made of 1084 and 15n20 steels. All the damascus knives that come from Billy are forged by him on site which impressed me a lot. This EDC has burganday fiber spacers and stabiized armadillo hide grip slabs.
The steel is about 1/8" thick. The OAL is 7 1/8" and the edge is 3 1/4". The sheath is made from 6 oz leather and nicely fitted and tooled.
The knife came paper slicing, and hair shaving sharp. The grip is superb and has an awesome texture to it and the shape of it feels natural in my hand. I do not know if I will be able to get myself to use this as a daily beater in my rotation but I am going to try because it is too nice a knife to leave home, and if I am going to carry it, I will have to cut things with it.
This is also my first damascus knife and a chance to try out what it is like in usage.DSC08886.jpgDSC08888.jpgDSC08891.jpg!cid_tie_8CE2FF32A11F87E_D9C_4C850.jpg
