Hello All,
I have not seen any mention of Billycans on this forum.
I rate the importance of the Billycan or similar type of container very highly, right up there with my clothing, knife, water and fire-starting equipment.
I know that a container of some sort can often be improvised in the field, but it is usually quite a difficult task, and may not be possible at all in a desert environment.

How do the other members of this forum feel about this ?.

Regards and keep well.

Some type of can is absolutely necessary during the summer when I go hiking. Around here all the water you drink must be boiled before drinking. A person only has to make a fire with a bow drill, then coal burn a bowl, then boil the water they've found once before they realize the amount of time and labor involved to get a drink of water. A billycan cuts this procedure down to 25% of the time of the other method.

O.K. I'm a dumb hick from Ahia, but what is a BillyCan? Does it go by another name??

aka "hobo stove",a good example is a coffee can rigged with a coat hanger handle. Many variations on this type cook can. Absolutely life saving, also many uses(ie. mini-shovel).

Ah, Kwan understand.
Wouldn't that be pretty bulky? What about just a large Sierra cup??

If I remember correctly from my scout days,,,
you take a can and turn it into a stove top by using the botttom as the fry surface, cutting upenings in the sides to feed a small candel fire or twins with other openings cut as required.

i remember some memorable grilled cheese sandwitches made on one.

Once or twice I've argued for a cooking container as being slightly less important than firemaking material and more important than a knife. You'll probably find those threads if you search for 'pot'.

I feel it is easier to improvise cutting implements than something to boil water in. Not everyone agrees with me. I will concede it's easier to carry a knife in your pocket than a pot...
