I had to make an unplanned trip to Taipei this weekend to see my daughter's painting that was on display in an international children's art exhibition at the Sun Yat Sing Memorial Hall. Since my wife and my daughter and I all had to go, we took the two boys.too. And since the Memorial Hall is fairly close to Taipei 101 (currently the tallest building in the world, we made a trip there as well.

As we were standing in line for the metal detector and elevator, I realized I had my bilton in my bag. I had planned to leave it in the car, but didn't get that done. I took my camera bag with all its brass and glass back from my son, who was carrying it for me. About then, the elevator arrived and we had to go through the metal detector. I went through, and it squealed, of course. The guard took one look at the camera bag I was carrying and waved me through. Whew.

So I now officially claim to have the HI bilton that has been the highest floor in the world's tallest building. :D

Below are the pics. Be patient if they don't appear as they should. I'm trying to figure out how to use a web image hosting service. One is of my gang next to the Sun Yat Sing Memorial Hall. The other is me with my bag on the 91st floor viewing deck, bilton handle showing. I had my son take that one without telling him what I was up to. I didn't dare take it out of the bag. There were security cameras everywhere. (If you are interested, you can see a better shot of it in the "vinegar patina" thread.)

Biltons find their way into all sorts of places, being small and handy helps with that. The 91st floor is a new one : )

Hi James,

Thanks for sharing this story.

One question:
Was the handle of the Bilton stuck out like in the picture while you're passing the security guard?

Best Regards,
Ted

I am glad it went well; although I don't see why it would have been a problem to begin with. You would think security woud be more focused on chasing large trucks with lit fuses.

I don't believe it would have amounted to anything earthshaking, but there would have been some serious frowning at best, at worst -- I'm not sure.

Fuses in Taiwan are pretty short because of the political climate. But we were in a rush to get back to Chang Hua where we live and back to class. If we had been delayed in any way, there would have been 60 students waiting on our doorstep with no teachers in site. That could have had serious repercussions for us. (And if they had confiscated my bilton I would have been p***ed.:grumpy:)

I'm glad that worked out well for you. I've had a few occasions where I have forgotten to remove my edc before entering some gov't bldgs. I probably look suspicious when I suddenly turn and leave the line just as I am about to go thru security. So far I've managed not to forget to pack my edc in my check-in luggage at the airport. Maybe this will turn into a "cool places my khuk has been" thread...

A great day for a bilton owner, and a even better one for his daughter.
