I have 2 kukri's incoming one from HI, a biltong, due in a "couple of weeks". and a 5 inch jungle panawal from GK&CO.
both will have wooden handles.

I am looking to start off on the right foot with maintainence, and was wondering if i needed to apply polyurethane coating to the handles to keep them weatherproofed, and to minimize chances of cracks? also what do you use to maintain the blade polish on the HI kukri's?

how do i weatherproof the sheath?
SNOseal? mink oil?

My advice is pretty low tech. Mineral oil. On the blade, the handle and the sheath (assuming its a black wood frame one). It is cheap, food grade (and the bilton is a pretty handy size for food prep) and will not go rancid. It has no odor.

It will soften leather, so don't use if on a sheath that isn't wood framed. It will also discolor a light color leather sheath. You will have to reapply it maybe more often than some of the higher tech lubricants.

As far as a simple kit for my Biltong I carry a small piece of steel wool and a small piece of Scotch-Brite pad. After I clean it I rub a small dab of olive oil or 2-in-1 oil on the blade and wipe it off. I use it on my work belt and in my haversack so I let the patina get a nice aged use. Mine has a horn handle. Have fun and be safe.

Bilton is as low-maintenance as it gets. Scotch-Brite and mineral oil / wax is all you need...

Given the wood handle, linseed or tung oil is appropriate. For the blade, renaissance wax is a great protector, though it might be overkill for just one knife. Camellia oil or mineral oil is fine for blade protection. Be sure to read sharpening tips.

My Advice is to hang your GK&CO up on the wall... They are garbage. I got a khuk from them a few years back and it was really unbalanced and the grinds were waaaay uneven. Not to mention the poor heat treatment
