Hi. I am trying to keep weight down to a minimum, what soap can you folks recommend to use for personal hygiene and to clean cooking utensils? i see alot online but aint to sure which ones have the best cleaning properties. thanks

I always use Dr Bronners when I'm out, that being said I guess I can't compare it to anything because it's all I've ever used. I've been more or less happy with it though. and as a plus you can use it as toothpaste and mouthwash.

I use Lifeventure All-purpose soap. It does everything ok, dishes, shampoo duty, regular soap etc, there are better soaps on the market but i got this one because its biodegradable and dosent pollute the enviroment. You can see it here: http://www.lifeventure.co.uk/htm/washgear/all-purpose-soaps.html

They look really interesting, it's VERY important to have gear that does not contaminate the environment.

Thats the only reason i pay for this stuff. I could take some of the regular liquid soap we use at home, but that stuff is pretty toxic for the lakes and streams. No need to add pollution to nature...theres already enough of that.

I've been lead to believe that Dawn is no different than the generic biodegradable camp soap sold in REI, Gander Mountain, etc.

Dr. Bronner's and or/ Campsuds all the way for me. ( Campsuds is a lot cheaper though )

Campsuds here... One of the problems with Bio Soap is that is won't sud up like we expect soap to do. So the tendency is to use Way too Much each use.

Dr Bronners for me. It cuts grease better and rinses easier than other products I've tried. I especially notice the difference when using cold water.

I've found the alchoal for the stove works good as a sanitizer for hands and to clean knives etc. I use Castile soap as it is all natural, has no fragrance (for hunting etc) and lathers extremely well in ice cold water. Dr. Bonner is a type of Castile soap. It often has a fragrance which defeats my mission profile and it is more expensive then the "off brand". Although I use Dr Bonner at home.

Camp suds for me. It's biodegradable, or at least says it is. Just the smell of that stuff makes me feel like I'm camping. I just saw on their site they make a version with citronella in it to help keep the bugs away. Sounds interesting.

I've done dishes, laundry and showered with campsuds, its done quite well for me. for utensils you can get away with adding white/gray ash to your cooking pot if there was any fat, that will create soap in the pot, note though it may be a bit caustic.
Sunlight dish soap is non-phosphate, and pretty easy on stuff I've been told, and any organic bar soap should be pretty bio-friendly as well, as long as you aren't in the same place all the time.

Dawn dish detergent is actually biodegradeable and environmentally friendly. Its what people use for cleaning water fowl who have been exposed to oil spills. I like camp suds too but its just easier these days to pump some dawn out of the industrial size container I keep of it into a sqeeze bottle lol. Wouldn't use it to brush my teeth though ;).

+1 for Dawn. No way i'm paying 10 - 15 bucks CDn for a little bottle of bio camp suds when dawn is the same thing
