I saw some great birch bark torches . Funnel shaped and held in the hand . I was wondering if they could be wrapped onto a stick to raise them above your head or plant in the ground . Do they need that funnel draft to keep lit properly?

I wish I lived in a rural area . I would like to have a couple going for hallow'een .
The fire department will be busy enough escorting kids without coming to put out my torches .

On a similar note . I have seen pine cones dipped in what is presumably wax being sold as firestarters . Mullein sounds like a vegetation . I will have to check. I seem to remember a fabric of some kind by that name .

What a plant . A lot to remember . I will have to make note of it . As shown in my rosehips/vitamins thread I am looking for natural sources for vitamins .

Great pic Doc Canada, but I'm not buying that mullein stem lamp.

It looks to me like a big resinous joint that has caught on fire:p

You are just jealous cause he didn,t offer to share .:D

I saw some mullein just the other night . Incredible . It makes what it has replaced over the years look like old news . Hey we are talking about torches here ?

Survival tip #147: Don't take any wacky weed with you because you might eat all of your food supplies in one day.

Actually the worst aspect is it totally messes up the sense of direction.
I'm not going to tell you how I know this but lets say "a good friend" ;) once backtracked nearly a mile uphill on a trail he had just walked because one of his friends insisted on getting him stoned at the lunch break and when they came to a junction none of them could remember which trail they had JUST walked:(

Wait a minute ? Smoking is a great way to improve your ability to tell direction .
At least on still days the smoke will always rise in the upwards direction .
If The wind is from the North the smoke will head towards the south .(and so should you .)

You want that bottom of the tube unobstructed for the draft- they burn MUCH better that way.
