Bird and trout knife

I've been looking to buy a "bird and trout" knife to welcome in the 2012 trout season! OK, it's really just an excuse to buy a new knife as it's been a while for me. As you can see, this is my first post and I joined in 2008. Extreme lurkerism I guess.

Anyway, I'd like a fixed blade, leather sheath, wood/natural material handle and has a 4" blade 8" length overall or approximate. My research has come down to the Buck 102 woodsman or the Grohmann bird and Trout.

Does anyone have any experience with either or both knives or other recommendations? It truly, will primarily be a fish and bird knife. Trout in the spring, panfish and catfish in the summer. Upland birds in the fall.

Thanks for any input. And just because I've never posted doesn't mean I don't visit. Jeeze, that sounds like something I'd say to my mother in law... Great site you guys have here and a lot of wonderful information. I can usually find what I need from a few searches. Thanks again.

I have the 102 and the D.H. Russell Canadian Belt knife and Boat knife. I think I will at some point add the Bird and Trout. You can't go wrong with any of them in my opinion.

Ah yes, forgot to mention price range. I would be willing to spend about $120 at the top end for this type of knife. So, those Dunn knives would be right at the tipping point. They are real nice, btw, and maybe I could save a bit more keep them in consideration.

Thanks jwh, yeah, I figure it's a close battle. US vs. Canada. If it were hockey that would be one thing, but in a knife fight, who wins? :)

Northwoods makes a beautiful Bird and Trout model. Wish I had a picture.

Queen has a great series of small fixed blades. D2 steel, bone handles. The Light Hunter seems especially suited to your needs.

Many small hunting knives are sold in the For Sale By Maker area here at Bladeforums, and plenty of them in your price range. You just have to watch and be ready to pounce when something you like is listed. If you don't mind a custom knife, that is.

Not everyone appreciates the 'unique' ergonomics of the Grohmann knives, but I'm a fan.

Thanks for the tip Bob. I'll keep an eye out on the knife maker, for sale section. I did a search in that forum and there were some very nice B&T's right around my price range. All sold of course, but I'll keep checking.

Something I've had success with, once you identify a maker that offers knives in a style and price range that match your taste and budget, why not contact them? Many will agree to make a knife just for you, customized to your specs, and for about the same price as their For Sale listings.

Here is the Northwoods Bird and Trout I was telling you about. Just took these pictures...
