to go off of PITDOG's thread, my pup charged upto this.
almost stepped in it on a trail the other day. no blood or guts to be found anywhere.
could a fox or something of the sort be the culprit or would this be the handy work of a hawk or some other flying predator in all likelyhood?

Not sure but maybe a hawk did it as there are no footprints around.
It may have carried the prey to somewhere safe to enjoy meal undisturbed.

Id speculate a hawk.I watched one devour a robin not to long ago. Only thing left were feathers and a beak. I took pics.

The first thing a hawk will do is pull off the feathers, then tear into the meal. Given any interruption, the meal will take place elsewhere.

Don't know what you have in your area, and can't tell what "volume" of feathers we're looking at, but my first guess would be a warbler of some sort- given the overall grey and the sunny yellow. Waxwings I've seen were more tawny than grey.

Is there a forensic ornithologist in the house? :D

Now, that is a good bit of backwoods knowledge coming from someone from Joisey. :D
Especially since you're in a more "city part" of NJ than me!

I was thinking a hawk but now I think it may have been a killer rabbit. :D

Seriously I have seen this before and believe it is remnants of a hawk's meal.

The bird on bird violence you describe is more than likely done by Accipiters. Probably a Sharp Shinned or Cooper's Hawk. These little buggers seem to have a heck of a mean streak.

Dipbait, great pics of that Sharp Shinned Hawk!!!
