Does anybody have any recommendations on a solid bird and trout knife? I’d like one I could add some character to, pass down to my son and keep on my belt or in my pocket during the hunt/fishing. Not a work knife but something to clean them up with.

How about any of these options available at AZCK. I like these options personally because they are lightweight

What's a good blade length size for this style?
I'm working on some things, but I need to listen to others More, instead of just doing what I like

The GEC H20 is fairly small

Bark River B&T is a bit larger, 1.5mm blade stock....

Something readily available and reliable is the Mora....lots of sizes to choose from here too....

I like blades thin and narrow for this. About 2 1/2" to 2 3/4" long. And 1/2" tall from edge to spine.
The Sonoran Belt knife bout sums up my definition of a B&T too. I had a visitor to the shop one time that has fished for salmonoids all over the world. He calls it the Trout Zipper:

AEB-L stainless at 62-63RC

26C3 high carbon at 63-64RC.

Hands down, my favorite small knife fixed blade (and one of my favorite fixed blades in general): the Bird & Shark by David Mary David Mary .

Mine even looks like a brook trout.

There are lots of great suggestions above, and there will surely be more great suggestions below, so you really can't go wrong. But I'm partial to mine.

love those handles
To me a good bird and trout, has a lot in common with a nice pairing knife.
indeed. I was thinking the same thing.

not too tall of a blade and 2.5 to 3.5" blade length

I love bird and trout patterns and Horsewright Horsewright does them about as close to perfect as anyone I know!

edit: timely thread as I actually sketched a new pattern out yesterday during a meeting that should have been an email.
Thank you sir for the kind words. The characteristics that make a good B&T also make a good ranch/branding knife. Lots of crossover there.

Horsewright Horsewright , I spotted the Sonoran in what looks to be elk on your website. Do you have more photos of your cross draw sheaths? Wondering if I could EDC it without printing. Warranty?

M.McAlevy M.McAlevy beautiful knife as well!

And David Mary David Mary your karambit is still going strong! Nice bird and trout as well!

Tough to choose!!

My buddy John prefers to carry his Horizontal sheath on the hip. But he is VERY thin.

I prefer more over the left front pocket:

Yes that particular Sonoran Belt Knife currently in stock is in elk and 26C3 high carbon steel. It's the one in the pics above. Here it is in its sheath:

The sheath has great retention and there is an audible clunk when the knife is inserted into the sheath. You will notice a V shape in the welt stitching, (second line of stitching up from the bottom). This V shape is the out line of the welt. So the front of the finger guard hits the welt at the front of the V before the tip of the knife contacts the welt and end of the sheath. This helps with the retention but also helps a guy not to shove the pointy knife through the from of the sheath by accident. You can turn the knife and sheath upside down and shake as vigorously as you can, the knife won't budge.

As far as printing I think that's going to depend on your body type, size and the cover garment so hard to say. Those two pics above were taken while I was wearing a pair of Cinch jeans. The belt loop arrangement on the jeans makes a bit of a difference too. The Wranglers (20X) I've switched to allow the knife to be worn more towards the belt buckle so less to stick out. So that's gonna matter too.

Warranty: My fault, forever as long as I'm physically able to and N/C. Your fault: Small shop fee and shipping, usually bout $25. I don't do much warranty work. Mostly a broken tip here and there and we all know how that happens. You mentioned something to be able to pass down and I do think of my knives as generational. I've got thousands out there being used and abused in some very tough environments. They just keep on keeping on.

Hope this helps. The other two guys you mentioned make excellent knives too!
