How useful is a blade like this? Comfortable at all? Convenient? Would it stand up to defense applications (not as a primary obvioulsly)? Survival?

I'm asking because I've been eyeing one for awhile and I see that Mr. Crawford offers one (out of my price range unfortunately) to be used for defensive purposes, I think. At least that's the theme behind the others.

Feedback if you please! :D

'Bird and Trout' knife seems to mean different things to different makers and different users. The first photo I show is my idea of a good one. Originally designed by Webster Marbles about a hundred years ago. I shoot birds and I catch trout and this little number will do both. The one I carry is made by CRKT. But self defense???? Naw.

Second pic is of a Randell Bird and Trout model. I can't imagine a worst design for either variety of game, but it does have many of the classic 'weapon' features making it a possibility for self-defense.

Other knife manufacturers have their own definition for a B & T knife. Seems to be no standard.

By the way, although I don't consider the little ring handled B and T I carry to be in any way a defensive weapon, I do carry it always in my boot when hunting or fishing. It's kept razor blade sharp, and its frequently the closest- easiest to draw knife I have with me when afield.
