Okay.... For a combat knife IMO the Fusion Butt makes a better skull crusher, so why is the Bird's Beak still so desired? Because it looks good? What's the story? Thanks.
Personally, I like the SFNO, but dislike the wavy butt of the hell Razor. I think sticking with SFNO's butt on that model would have better.
I'm also not a big fan of the Badger/SJ butt, but not because of the tip, but because of the wavy micarta.
IMO only..... thoughts?

I agree on all those point other than the TAC. Well, I do agree that the waves are a pain to deal with. I sand and buff mine so the points don't dig into my sides while riding in a sheath.
I would have bought a HR if they had the SF butt. And the Fusion Skull Crusher is one of the ultimate tools for me. The BB doesn't do anything for me.

I think looks have nearly everything to do with it. The birds beak is more aesthetically pleasing than the fusion....and since 99.9% of us will never need to use our Battle Mistress to crush someone's skull I don't think the better skull crusher would win out between the two. Not to mention the FBM's and FSH's are probably towards the last on the list for knives I'd carry into combat if I ever had to...hypothetically speaking.

One thing I like about the BB on the smaller knives like the ASH-1 is that you can choke up with your pinkie gripping the end of the birds beak if you need some chopping power in a pinch....other than that I think it's purely aesthetic.

I totally agree with you on the SFNO handle...I really like it...and I think the HR handle is wierd looking....actually, downright ugly. I don't like the wavy micarta on the Badger's and SJ's either.

What I think I discovered was the true purpose of the HR butt. It appears to be made for POUNDING, like a tent stake. That's the only reason I can see for the way the "bumps" align, which makes it look otherwise funky.

It also is smoother on the hand in the chopping position than the SFNO butt.

Heck, I like round butts !

.

What do you use it for?

When I'm outdoors, camping and such, it comes in handy pounding tinder, tenderizing meat, driving small spikes, striking flints, the list could go on. I like that it has a pointed tip for smaller, agressive chores and a rounded lobe that is fair for scraping and the like. The only circumstances I could see using it as it's namesake is if I was quick enough to think of using it when attacked by an animal, or if it bounced while throwing the blade, and hit me in the head.;):D

Birds Beaks are just cool looking... I like them for their look and origin of the style. The Fusion is a much better handle design when it comes to use. My favorite is the SF stlye, but I've only held the razor (that's soon to change ;) )

I think the fusion handle is an appropriate size for the mistress blade length, but looks a bit big on the Steel heart. I also wish the top hump at the tang did not stick up as high as it is... grind about 1/8" off and it's perfent IMHO. Same goes for the TAC handle... less of a center top hump would be great. The TAC handle has really been growing on me since I got my BATAC LE.

I'd love to handle an SFNO one day. Or an SFBA ;) But until then I love the TAC handles. But more on something like the BATAC SE where the extra INFI helps it fill the hand better. It works great. I've had to smack a few taggers at work on the head with it. ;) (no. not really).

You can use my SFNO whenever we next get together  I'm giving it a working satin finish w/o the scales right now....I'm still procrastinating buying the tubes to replace the scales :p...I left the coating from underneath the scales so if any water/moisture gets in there it'll be safe from rust. It's a sweet knife!

Sweet. Any pics? It'd make a great "how to" thread. :)

No pics....yet. I totally forgot, didn't even think to take any :o I've already stripped it and brought it to 1200g. Unfortunately, while it was clean underneath the coating, the uniform machining marks while fine, are still a bit too deep to get out with anything less than 48 hours of sanding :p I'm just going to bring it to a polish right over them, kinda like on my SHBM and leave it at that. A good working finish
