Birds-eye rock maple
154CM with SS fitings.
I've had a bunch of this stuff for over 25 years

edited to add
this one is a through hidden tang, screw on pommel,
dovetailed in front, a real pain to fit just right . you'll see the solid piece of Maple is razed above the
fittings

I have about 30 feet of it too Dan. I was eying it tonight thinking about using it on another belt ax that's nearing completion.

The only problem I have with Birdseye is when you turn it or even round the edges over, the eyes grow into fat stripes or just go away. They are hard to predict.

On flat slabs they work fine though.

That knife shows a lot of work. It's beautiful but sure will scare hell out of the deer herds! :D

Very nice! It looks like a great user knife with plenty of class.

Mike
Mr. godstreeabove he does very nice work. don't you think:)
and that gives me an idea :)

Thanks Guys

Peterdon :) this stuff is not to bad, just got to be careful that the eyes don't pop out while working it.

BTW .. this one is a through hidden tang, screw on pommel,

Ray I'll show up with something ;)
you know how you forge the front fiting to fit your knives ....
this one I milled out the solid price of SS to embrace the blade, milled the tang hole from the back rear end and milled in the dove tail then matched the front of the Maple..

Excellent work, Dan! Will I get to see it at Stamford?
afraid not on both counts Jeff
I'm not going this trip and the Knife is sold and gone..
most of what I make is sold before I make them, so it's hard to have
any ahead for the shows.
I'm to far behind to put my customers off to make playtoys for myself..
but I sneak one in once in a while, I only have 3 here right now
and that's a lot for me to have hanging around.

Dan, What kind of treatment did you do to the blade steel and the fittings? It don't take much to show me up......

you do nice work Ray, no one is showing you up..

before I was stabilizing my own I had some of this Maple treated by K&G
I grind her down starting with a hogger,,then 220 400 to 15 to 91/2" micron and a light buffing with white rouge hand sand if you can't get at parts of it.
I finished the wood off the tang, with this one.
if this were bear wood I'd skip the rouge back up a liitle and use some minwax wood harder or something on it and refinish,

the steel is done almost the same

hogger 60 grit or 80 depending what I have at the time :)
,,then 220 heat-treat go back to 220 400 to 30, to 15 micron then hand sand 1000 - 1500
then a light buffing with white rouge

I use to use the 9 1/2 belts = to about 2000? grit but it's only good for about 3 passes on each side and there goes $3.50  :grumpy:

opps same for the ss fittings

reading it again,,,treatment?
do you mean heat treatment? and cryo?

Thanks Roger
you know it...and that made me look back a little

I was thinking about past lookers that have come into my shop. customers,, (unenlightened customers..) :D
it's amazing that only in my shop, would I get the question? with the name gray on it only someone named gray would want to buy it
he must have thought it was a fancy monagramed key ring :)

belive it :D

I'm going to start a new thread :) watch this :)

Don't worry about it Dan. They aren't live ones anyhow. They're just window shoppers looking for a steal. When I was very young and just married I became a new and used car salesman. I saw a lot from car salesmen but I never saw such dishonesty as that from more than just a few customers. I love customers and just like us they are top shelf but there is always that few that ruin the moment. I have never seen a bad knife customer yet but then I don't have a 'walk-in' store or shop, so I get my few from here and the likes.

I have never seen a bad knife customer

I don't know if you can call them customers Rodger, but I have seen a lot of rude lookers. I dislike petty rudeness. Justifiable rudeness is another thing....anyway,
I can't tell you how many times I've been at someones table and see someone pick up a knife look it over, look at the price and put it down in disgust. While walking away they will make a comment like "Junk"

I hate people like that!

Now the polite way to handle that is look at the knife, make a complementary comment to the maker, ask the price and say

"What.....does a jar of Vaseline come with it?

Yes of course I see your position. I have never been a part of a knife show and I have no walk ins. All my very limited sales have either been locals or internet and only, so far, serious knife people except for a few enquiries that never came back after getting a price. I hope I did not exhibite a attitude that I think myself some sort of a veteran knife maker that has had a lot of experience with knife customers. I have so far not. However, I want to say that I have not experienced a bad experience with any customer so far and I have a good feeling about them.
