Here's a skinner that I designed for a buddy a while back. Its has proved to be extremely popular. One really has to be handled to appreciate the way they feel. I have like three more of these that have been requested from local people. Tell me what you think. The handle is hickory, the blade steel was donated by a saw blade. Hardened by a torch and quenched in peanut oil. Super, super sharp.

It looks like it would skin a deer. I was thinking that a lanyard would be handy so you could drop the knife to pull down on the hide, but maybe the hole in the ricasso does the same thing? How do you work with the hole?

The hole is made with a 3/4" drill bit. Its actually there for your first finger. It gives you absolute control over the tip. Its funny that you mention the lanyard hole Lonepine. All subsequent ones will only have one pin in the front and a lanyard hole in the back. The knife was designed specifically for whitetail deer. They don't get real big here in central Missouri so its a rather small, very handy knife.
Thanks Melsdad. My father and I have found that not only does the mirror polish look good, but it also helps retard corrosion and it cuts much smoother also. There is much less drag from the material. I can't wait to get reports back on them this deer season.

I shape and sand all the handles on the knife. They are shaped with a Nicholson 4 in 1 rasp and then sanded to the final profile. I am a huge fan of tung oil and thats what I've been using a lot of. Unfortunately I haven't done any sheaths yet. That's still in the works. This knife was number 6 that I've made. Cant wait to show everyone my bowie when I get it finished. I've got some really neat designs that I'm wanting to start on. Mediterranean dirks, kitchen knives, all kindsa stuff. If only I could do this full time.

Cool! Love to see them when you get them completed. If you need any sheath advice, check out our sheath sub-forum. Lots of great makers over there.
