I'm a newbie to this business. I just picked up a Schrade Walden bird's head 171uh, ser #09428, in the original box. I'm curious when it was made and if it is a rare knife. I didn't see any on ebay with this type of handle. This thing is very sharp but appears to have a factory edge. I have never seen a factory edge so sharp. Is this right?

Yes,they came that way I have seven of them. I am looking for more. Can you post a picture or email it to me and I'll post it for you. These were only made for 11/2 years with the BH pommel so they are hard to find.I keep track of the serial numbers and the highest I've seen is 10,992.It's in my collection. If you check my avatar you'll see mine.Welcome to the forum.Arnold

Now is that a Birds Head, a Bear's Head, or a Baer's Head? Now I am confused.... I always thought it was a dog. Lets see some pictures.

This is the Baer bear head pommel. The Baer bird's head is different.

And naw, it isn't a dawg!

Ah. Now I see the difference. I haven't been willing to cough up the big bucks for one of those big fellows yet, but I can see how a good pommel would help you hold on to it, be it a bird or a Baer.
Now I do know that some of the other Schrade Walden knives I have had a very good edge from the factory. You can tell that workers took pride in their finished product.
Thanks Rick
