Fellas,
I hear alot of talk about the AK's and Bas's and M43's...
What about the Hanuman Special?

Trying to pick out my first khukuri...

Like the Chiruwa... but this one is calling to me....

Trying to understand Khukuri's from a maker's perspective...figure it's one of those got to be there deals...

It depends. The blade will be the same quality as the regular HI offerings. It's just if the handle grabs you as a desirable feature to have. They look a little too big for my hands though.

I've always wanted one but never got around to buying one yet. But I DID get a slip in my mailbox today! That means my 12" AK will be in my posession tomorrow. That's one I have been anxious to own since getting the Pen knife and hearing everybody talk about the little AK's.

My first was of course an 18" WWII for my son, then a BAS came along, next another 16.5" WWII, then the Sgt.Karka 15" AK's came up and I had to have one of those and then UB had another 18" WWII wood handle up, I had to have and today I got what is now got to be my favorite.......a wood handle 21" Gelbu Special by Kumar.

These have all been bought since the middle of December.

I don't know what to tell you. I think anyone you get will "the one" until the next one you buy and you won't be disapointed with any of them.

The Glebu Special certainly should be considered. It has really good balance and seems to be just the perfect weight for me.

Did anyone notice that Hollowdweller took the occasion of the thread to tell everyone about his 12" AK arriving? Now, that just about says it all for HIV!

ShaneJustice, (is that your real name or a play on "Shane"?) I just got a Hanuman. It was one of those I figured I could never afford. I've always wanted one. Bruise said the blade was an AK and the handle was the question, but you also have to admire the tool kit that comes along.

I'm in awe of mine. I love it.

But as a first blade? You can't go wrong with one, as long as your hand likes the handle, and mine are average hands, but a WWll or AK are good choices because each will teach you in use what your interests and abilities are. Not that a Hanuman couldn't do that too.

Munk,

;) :D :D

So what are the little tools with the Hanuman? I have always been fascinated by those little ones but I have never really been able to see what they all are.

I always wanted one of those too cause Hanuman is cool, all his selfless service to Ram. Cool since the Ramanya is about a battle they put his head on a big blade.

I didn't know it came with a tool kit. But then you could always get a Berk Special for that too.

Bruise, I just checked the shopping site and there wasn't a Berk special that I could find- maybe it's there- but on the web site it was featured. The blade is a lot different. The Hanuman is a member of the AK family. The Berk special is shaped like a large leaf, a copy of an older era's blade with a name I can neither spell nor pronounce but meaning 'two fullers".
It's at 350 dollars.

As for what these tools do- I don't know yet. I used one of them to pry open a hatch on Buzz Lightyear's space ship. My son couldn't open it. You'd like it, Bruise, it's a large hatch that opens directly under the Captain's seating position. You can space Mr. Lightyear to infinity and beyond.

The Hanuman and Berk special both have come with the tool kit. :o My wording was pretty vague.

I know there's a pair of tweezers in there and a steel for striking flint. What else is there?

A chisel. Button hook. Leather punch; a vicious one. You could do a murder mystery based upon the leather punch in these toolkits.

The little kid in one of those Super Bowl commercials had a line that applies here: "That's just wrong Dad" :D

First thanks for your advice....it really helps!

I will probably end up with the Chiruwa AK just to give me some experience with Khukuris.
My Birthday is coming up. Don't know if I can wait...maybe hafta drive to Reno. ROAD TRIP!

Second, to munk...yes this is my honest-to-God name. I guess I am not imaginative to come up with a cool internet name. It would also be hard tro keep my shop going under a psuedonym

Justice Custom Knives...that's me.

Sounds like useful stuff.

Well Shane, I had to ask. It's a great name. "Cougar Allen" is a great name. I don't know why all of us can't be called, "Cougar Allen" but we can't. In the desert there's a shrub called, "Buckthorn" and it's sharp, too. This seemed an idealic name. In a phone book, in some State, Somewhere, I actually found Someone who answered to Buck Thorn.

The Hanuman usually has those, too. :)

My Hanuman blade is more Dui Chirra than AK.

I checked mine, Raghorn, it's AKesque. Yours must be lovely. Those leaf like blades are more beautifull than even the m43.

How does yours chop? Does the traditional AK outchop both the M43 and the Berkley type?

Comes with the tool kit mentioned above. Like the Berk Special and Garud the Hanuman does not have a full length "through" tang. Hence the pins through the handle. The handle design is actually a monkeys head. Nice khuk.

Just to put my two cents, I have a Kumar Hanuman, the swiss army knive of Khukuris, which is a wonderful khuk to look at with its impressive blade and magnificent carved handle, however I wouldn't recommend it as a first khukuri. My hands are are the small side, and the Hanuman grip is on the thick side, so it's not a comfortable khuk for me to handle - plus it is much too nice for me to ever consider using it "in the field." I've relegate field duty to my 16.5 in WWII, which is a magnificent blade in its own right. My favorite blade is probably a 21 inch Bura Gelbu, but I also have a 20 inch and 18 inch Sirapati, 18 inch Chitlangi, 12 inch AK, 18 inch Gelbu,a Biltong - obviously an example of HIKV in action. If it was me I would choose a WWII or Gelbu as a first khukuri, however I think, truth be told, it really doesn't matter because I doubt seriously your first will be your last!

It's AK-shaped, but has those two awesome fullers with high, sharp lines between them.

It chopped well enough to pass the receiving test that I give all my khuks upon arrival. Since then I've done nothing but polish and ogle it.

Interestingly enough it fits perfectly into my 18" AK scabbard.

Pics of the tools? We demand pics of the tools.

Otherwise known as the vampire root canal kit.
