What's the difference between Khukuri labeled BirGorkha and the other knives? Do certain Kami's work at one location or the other? Is it just a matter of finish and quality that all of the Kami's make?

HI started by buying good villager khuks ( by village kamis ) to sell to augment the HI made khuk line.

Unfortunately, due to the Maoists they moved from shop 2 to a different location where they are now ( to be moved yet again when the monsoons allow finishing up yet another shop ). They had to pay taxes on the business where they are now, which meant they had to name the company on paper in Nepal, so Kami Sherpa ( the boss there and Yangdu's dad ) called the place BirGorkha ( still Himalayan Imports on this side of the world ).

OK, remember, most village kamis ( blacksmiths ) are illiterate. They can't find the new shop to sell their wares. If they did, the Maoists could too.

Now there are no village khuks coming in. The kamis at BG/HI decide they can do up a good khuk without the fancy finishing and mark it BG in Devanagari instead of the top of the line HI marked khuks.

So if you buy a khuk with a BG instad of an HI at the bend in the blade, it's made by the same kamis who make the HI khuks. It'll be usable and ugly duckling like. Cheaper price, though. And it ain't gonna look much worse if you use it.

Hope that explains it to your satisfaction.

Yes and thank you. I was mainly wondering because of the different design and edge profile on my new Village AK's which I really like. Must just be the difference in individual Kami style.

Hats off to your Rusty - you're running a good ship while Uncle is away !!

Don't know how you find the time mate !

Actually I've a mind like a steel trap for triva and esoterica. Uncle's mind remembers the stuff that's important. Me I forget the big stuff and remember the details. Makes us a pretty good pair when you add forumites like JP and Yvsa.

Reminds me of a Gene Wilder film where he's hanging by his fingertipss over a cliff and someone walks up and asks if he needs help, to which he replies: "Oh, only all I can get!"

And just like a Navy Chief double posting to pound the point home. Us ossifers only existed to do the Chief's bidding...we just didn't know it.
