Birkenstocks

I just bought a pair of Birkenstocks from Nordstroms Rack for about $65 dollars. I understand that run $110-130 retail. My problem is that they came with a Nordstrom sticker where my heel sits. When I removed the tag I noticed sticky residue where the tag was. I tried a baby wipe to get the "goo" off and it worked a little bit, but some goo was left over. I could take them back and just not wear Birkenstocks (every pair has the same Nordstroms tag and I assume they all would have the residue problem) OR I could just suck it up and be happy with getting them at a $50 discount. What do you guys think? This is my first pair of Birkenstocks and they feel amazing, other than the sticky goo. Would you guys take them back? Do you have any idea how to get rid of the goo without messing up the fabric? What are your experiences with Birkenstocks? Do you like them? Are they worth the money? Should I take these ones back and spend the $120 for a pair without the gooyness? How do they work for hiking?

Thanks

Keep them. After you wear them for a while it will stop being sticky. I've had my birkenstocks for almost 2 years now and they are awesome, I think they're a solid investment.

...or just wear them. Unless it is enough where you actually notice it while they are on, it sounds like a cosmetic thing that no one else will notice.

I've been wearing them for somewhere around 38 years (not the same pair - though some of them may look like it). So I guess that I like them. If I don't absolutly need shoes, I'm wearing them. I was given my first two pairs. A friend bought a pair and said they didn't fit him. Then did the same thing the next year. I consider them my formal flip flops, only much more comfortable and much better for your feet.

I would definitely keep the pair you have. As far as the sticky stuff....if you're having problems getting rid of it and don't want it on your heel.... what I've done in similar cases is put a small, thin layer of Kleenex over just the sticky part. It may look too funky for you for a while, but it seems to sort of soak the goo up over time and wears away with it.

As for hiking, it probably depends on what type of Birkenstock you have. I've always had, and prefer the sandal type with no heel strap and open toes and can wear them casually all day but have found that longer walks/hikes at a good pace, rough terrain, and running is just a bit too hard on my feet and takes its toll on the sandal. If I'm doing a lot of moving around, it is really cold out, or maybe I'm in a dusty environment, I've been known to wear socks with them. I've been informed that this is a major fashion faux pas and have been threatened with death for doing it but I'm a social cripple anyway so it really doesn't matter. So, now your next step is to try out the Vibram Five Fingers. Enough of them are sold in Santa Cruz so you should be safe. Mike

A squirt of WD-40 will take off labels and goo. Spray a little bit on it and wipe it off.

So if I understand correctly, the sticker was placed in the footbed? I wouldn't use any WD40 or anything there because the footbed is made from leather, some type of suede I guess, and it would absorb the liquid you are pouring on there. Instead I would take a sharp knife and try to scrape the glue residue off. It shouldn't hurt the leather at all and even if the surface looks a little different, after a while the leather gets real smooth from your 'foot grease' anyway! :)

Buncha hippies! :D

Denatured alcohol would be good after scraping with a sharp edge.

Sprinkle a bit of talcum powder on the sticky bit and it won't stick to your socks but will wear off eventually along with the sticky stuff.
