I need a new pocket knife. I am going through withdraw, haven’t bought a new "EDC" type knife in over a year. Right now I am carrying a BM 710 on my left (Dominant hand) side, and a serrated Calypso Jr. on my right.

I am thinking either an Endura 4 or a Pacific SALT to replace my BM 710. I would really like to get a Titanium handled ATR, but that just isn't in the works right now. I am kind of short of funds and looking for instant gratification.

Should I wait for more of this ZDP stuff I keep hearing about to come out? What do yall think about all these H-1 steels? Should I go ahead and get a Endura 4 cause it is that BAD? Will Rocky and Bullwinkle be able to survive into the next spellbinding episode of Spyderco's rediculiously awsome use of ergonomics and revolutionary steel in the knifemaking industry?

I don't know... what do yall think?

The Endura/Delica line is cool, but there's no way it's going to beat the 710 you're carrying now.

If you're looking for something like that in the Spyderco line, try my para. It's a shorter blade, but full sized handle. I forget if it's ambi or not. And obviously, the Military. It's even longer than your 710 (not in blade length, overall), I believe. Very slim and easy to carry though. Love how they look.

In fact, I'm making my recommendation the Military. It's a liner lock though, and I can't recall of it has an ambi clip.

The D`allara drop point will own an Endura if you've got the pocket space and is totally ambi.

The centofantes I really enjoy, but they're significantly smaller than an Endura or 710.

The yojimbo is pretty weird, but it might fit the bill.

Same with the ocelot.

And I KNOW you like the dodo.

Outside of the spyderco line, the Kershaw Spec Bump would be good, if you don't mind AO.

My bad, doesn't look the military or para are ambidextrous.

The 710 has been great, but I have never really cared for the way Benchmade heat treated their ATS-34 in this knife. I am sure they sacrificed some hardness for ease of sharpening and lost a bunch of edge retention in the process.
I can tell a significant difference in the edge retention of my Calypso Jr. in VG-10 and a couple of my custom 440C knives than with my ATS-34 710.

Art, you forget that most of those knives aren't ambi.

The Dodo...yes...hmm... of course where I can find it it is double what the Endura is. I don't know...

How about a D'Allara 2 DP? The ball bearinglock is smooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth. Or wait for the Delica ZDP. The Jess Horn ZDP will be out in July (est.). You can pre-order the Jess Horn.

Do any of the ZDP knives come with ambidextrous clips?

That D'Allara does look big and bad, however I worry about it taking up too much of my pocket. It looks awful wide when closed. Then again, I may just be being picky.
Although it is growing on me... I don't have a ball bearing lock yet.

I'm guessing, since they made a calypso Jr. in ZDP...

The UK Pen Knife with a lockback setup is coming out this year and supposedly in ZDP as an option, which should be pretty fantastic.

The d`allara and dodo are definitely ambidextrous, but are both tip up. Also, I know you're not a big fan of the BB lock, but the d`allara does have one finger closing (unlike my dodo) with a little practice. The d`allara's bb is probably the better of the two.

My coming week is absolutely totally 100% packed, with a chem quiz this tues, a lab pre lab and lab report tues, comm assignment wednes, a major speech (full class length) friday, a test in cellular bio monday morning, a 3k sociology midterm after that, a communications exam after that and then a chemistry quiz, pre lab and lab report the next day. I've taken out the minor stuff for brevity. I'm complaining. But I'm angry about it. So the BF people will have to suffer my whinyness. But I digress-point being, after next tues, I'll once again have some time and I'll take you to the Knife Shoppe in arlington, which has an excellent spyderco lineup.

I'm just barely going to be able to make it to SAC on Thursday, and I may have to come late.

Art,
Don't worry about it man. I am going to have to find a job this week. Funds are getting too close to call for and I am going to have to end my little vacation.

At home I'm carrying my Manix, which I just put a lanyard on, my daily EDC out and about is my Native III plain edge. Not too big for sheeple, great ergos etc.

Dave, it is a little difficult to recommend something to replace the 710. I really like mine, and currently carry it on my off side. It is certainly better than the Endura, but the steel(ATS-34), as mentioned is a little fallible. The Military is a good recommendation for size, but the lock is totally outclassed by the Axis. The Paramillie is phenomenal, but is not ambi, and doesn't offer a significant advantage over the Caly that you already carry for cutting activities. If you edc the 710 for SD, and keep the Caly for work, consider a Chinook. A Manix is also a good recommandation, but not as well-suited for this.

Aw hell. Just go get a Yojimbo:D . It is superb for many things, utility(it's a big box cutter) or SD(it's a big box cutter). It is also ambidextrous and has a lock equal in speed and toughness to the Axis, IMHO.

So what I am hearing from yall is that I need to save up and buy a Titanium handled ATR. A knife capable of ousting the 710 from my primary carry role.

The titanium ATR is cool, but I think it's pretty dang expensive.

I'd take a close look at the ocelot. It's full ambidextrous, g10, s30v, and I checked on it, the clip is ambidextrous AND tip up and tip down.

Yes... the Ocelot...hmm...
I like it, kinda large, yet fru-fru enough not to scare the sheeple...hmm.... more research is needed.

Dave, the mini manix came to my mind today. I believe it's a truly ambi folder, including reversable clip with tip and tip down options. It's not as big as your 710, and not as small as your Calypso. One thing you might like is the ultra low ride clip. I might end up picking one for myself.

In the next couple of weeks, maybe we can get together for an NGK order.
