Today my stepdad turns 60. He had a Buck 110 when he was much younger that he loved but gravitated towards the Case Sodbuster in the 90’s and it was then and with that pattern he learned to sharpen his knives. He was one of the big influencers on me that got me into sharpening as a teen. So for his birthday my mother told me he wanted a Timex watch because he loves them. I got him the style he likes but I did him one better and got him a Buck 110 LW as well. He got to the point he don’t care much for heavy knives anymore so the lightweight seemed like a winner. So much so that I got myself one too.

I’m satisfied with both knives. Fit & Finish, blade centering, lockup, etc. all nice in my opinion. And I know he’ll be pleased with his.

Arriving home, I got out my DMT stones and set to getting the factory edge on his sharper. I chose to leave mine as-is but I wanted to get a mildly mirrored edge on his but leave about half the factory grind marks on it so it is new factory edge but enhanced I reckon you could say. On my knives I prefer a coarser edge, I’d say 220 grit is where I stop at and then give a light strop and it’s good. He has always liked more high polished edges and it made me feel like I actually put a little work into his gift to personalize it in a way. So after the black, blue, red, and then green DMTs, I used a leather strop and some Mothers Mag&Aluminum polish to get it where I wanted it for him.

I’m not much of a photographer and couldn’t capture the polish on the edge to my satisfaction but here goes. Unfortunately photobucket is not cooperating with me at the moment or I’d post pics

Sounds like a great gift and the fact that you put your own personal touch on it makes it that much better. I’m sure he will love it.

My goodness. You certainly do like a toothy edge . I thought I was getting toothy when I stopped at 400 grit. And even then I found that I wanted at least 600.

Hope your stepdad loves it!👍👍👍

Thank you sir :-) I hope he feels like you do about it.

Most of the time I stop at 220 on my user beater 110. Other times I’ll just hit it on a Norton India stone, seems to be a medium grit, and it’ll get that sticky, thumb-print-grabbing sharpness I like. I want this edge on Hunting knives, especially. Other traditionals, I go up to 1200 grit and then strop. Not as toothy but still a good edge IMO. Just depends on what I use the knife for as to which edge it’ll get from me. I have a soft spot for a cleanly apexed 220-325 grit edge. I think it’s more fun to play around with and work hard.
