Everyone's asked me so many times how camping was so I'll just post it.
We left Friday night about 6, finally found a good spot near Allenspark about 8:30. The spot was a little unconventional, right up the side of a mountain, and the road getting there I saw little of...I four wheel with my eyes covered..and this road was a killer. 4-5 foot ruts and holes with mud at least 2 feet deep, we bottomed out the '76 Jeep Cherokee Chief a couple times, but we finally made it.
Got camp set up and had just got the fire going when we heard someone down the hill "Hey...didja know you're on private land?!" Ooooh crap! The guy was nice enough to let us stay the night, but first thing Sat we had to pack up 2 tents, and all the "stuff" to find another spot. Believe it or not, the road got worse! Had to peek out from behind my hands when Dan said "How 'bout this spot?"
We finally found an ok spot up Parachute Hill..probably named cause once you four-wheel up that hill you just want to jump off the cliff and end it all. Set up camp completely again...Dad and son went for a walk and I laid in the sun to snooze...
Not 30 minutes later here they come..saying they had found a better spot just 100 yards up the road. I was adamant.."We are NOT moving again!" Dan said "I'll do everything, you dont even have to get up" (Uh huh, suuure)
So 10 minutes later here we are CARRYING our set-up tent down the road..what a couple of idiots..thank goodness there wasn't a soul around, no one else braved that road all weekend. Dan put our son's tent ON TOP of the Jeep to carry it up the road..it was the most hilarious ridiculous site you've ever seen. Finally got camp #3 set up, and we STAYED....
Dan saw a bighorn sheep w-a-y up close, he wouldn't move out of the middle of the road, at one point. We also found very fresh mountain lion and deer tracks in the morning.
We had a terrific time, even if I had to make my own birthday dinner....I got busy and forgot about the steaks which turned really tough, but Dan said "That's ok honey...it's great jerky" Son brushed his teeth with anti-itch cream on accident, too..that was pretty funny.
We had great plinking access, right from our camp spot (#3). Got lots of practice with my birthday present..a Colt Government Series 380. Took too many Spydercos to mention, and used them all. Got a chip in one that'll have to be fixed up...(Hi Keith!)
Also took a new fixed blade that was sent to me by a maker right here in the forum and LOVED it. Man, did that thing slice! (Thanks ADG). All in all it was a fun trip. Can't wait till next weekend...4 days in the hills...woo hoo!
Thanks for all the great birthday wishes, that was so nice of everyone. I had a great time reading them when I came home. Even printed them out, for posterity.
Vince~whatcha got for me?! Is it blue? C'mon!!!!
