Birthday Gift for Dad?

I'm trying to think of a gift to give to my dad for his fifty-something birthday. If he was like me, I would just get him a knife. But he's not, while he likes knives fine, he just doesn't want one. However, he does beleive that everything needs to be useful in one way or another. I would like to keep it under $100. Neither my dad or I hold birthdays as a big deal and we have had a $100 cap on it for as long as I can remember. Maybe you folks can give me an idea by what you have given or received as birthday gifts?

I guess I should list a bit about him;
1. He camps, whenever he cans
2. He has been a cook most his life
3. He likes hats
4. constantly losing his wallet

....that should do for now, THX

My father's birthday is approaching as well and I'm giving him a Quantum D2 flashlight. He lokes to have a light on him, but he hates carrying much around in his pockets and doesn't care for pocket clips. This will almost certainly end up on his keychain so he won't lose it. Not sure if ypur pop digs that kind of gadget, but it's a well designed piece of gear.

You know a few months ago I would've said that he doesn't and neither do I. But I've been carrying a little pelican in my pocket and its hard to go a day when I don't use it. Adding to my list, Thanks

Could he use some new kitchen knives? I've heard good things about the ESEE/Becker line... 4 piece set for under $60.

He's over 50?

It's time for a Tilley hat.

If I would have known at 20 what the sun could eventually do to me, I would have been wearing one then.

Opinel #8, since you're posting it here I figure the gift suggestion should be knifey related :D

Look at the stuff he has and the tasks he does daily, then choose something that will make his life easier. Not just more clutter to occupy mental and physical real estate.

- a hat and a headlamp that plays nice with whichever hat you choose.
- a murse to organize his EDC gear if he'd actually use such a thing

Time and/or consumable goods are always a good option.
- A case/bottle of his favorite wine/beer/whiskey
- Food, a nice dinner with his son or a some choice cuts of meat he'll enjoy
- A reason to spend time together. Tickets to an event or hobby you'll attend together

I was about to say pretty much the same thing. I have a Gortex rain hat that I love for camping.

A murse? he might beat me with a belt if I ever got him one of those :D

I wouldn't have pegged my dad for a murse guy either; staunch heterosexual that he is.... but he carries around so many odds and bits he started organizing them in a camera bag a few years back. Later he upgraded to an actual leather murse. Go figure. :D
