I am considering 2 options to reward myself for nothing.

option 1
a. CRK Umnumzaan
or
b. Strider SNG

Option 2
Edgepro Apex 4 +

one of the following

spyderco military
emerson commander
edura 4 ZDP-189
para 2 (can't find this so its ruled out)
other?

If I get option 2 with the commander can the edgepro sharpen it without the half inch stones? I have plenty of other knives that need mirror edges too, and already have a sharpmaker.

please weigh in and let me know which you would get, and why.

No Sebenza? Haha

I'd vote for the Umnumzaan.

You can always get much cheaper stones and learn to sharpen freehand.

I already have the sharpmaker with ultrafine stones, and various other items like sandpaper and strop, maybe I should just learn to use them better.

I am lefty so a left hand umnum would be nice

My girlfriend added her vote for "which one is the cheapest?"

I'm a lefty myself, managed to pick up a lefty Umnum recently.

The problem with the SNG is that it probably won't be a lefty version. If I recall correctly, Strider made a few left-handed SNG's, but I've never actually seen one.

If you happen to live in/near Pennsylvania, I know that Fred Eisen Leather in New Hope PA has one (I bought the other one :) ) if it hasn't been purchased already.

I live in PA, I will have to give fred a call. Seeing them in person will help alot, since I have never seen a CRK or SNG in person.

Do you know of any other good knife shops for Strider, CRK or others in PA?

Another great place is Sharp Unique Gifts for Men/Classic Custom Knives (They are run by the same guy). Jack is just a great guy, I spent probably 2 hours in his store while he showed me all sorts of stuff.

By now he might have a left-handed Sebenza or an Umnumzaan, as I was trying to find some last month, which he said was supposed to be getting pretty soon when I was talking to him.

I haven't personally been to too many other ones, so my suggestions are limited to the Philadelphia area.

You cant call yourself a knife knut until a CRK passes through your hands. I'd go with the umnumzaan.

You can't go wrong with either the CRK or the Strider. You can buy an Edgepro later on, after you use your new knife until it's dull. ;)
And good job on taking care of yourself for your birthday.
Carpe diem! Or in this case; Carpe knife-um! :D
