It's soon to be my 22nd birthday, which as luck would have it falls the day before I start my finals. In order to cheer me up my girlfriend has suggested that I might like an engraved knife. I own 3 spydies already (native, merlin, ladybug) all with FRN handles that I get on really well with. I have been looking at SS handle models (for engraving) such as the dragonfly (a small model would be better since she might be a little bit apprehensive about getting me something like the civilian :-) ).

What do you think?

The stainless Native is one of my favorite Spydies. Feels different from the zytel model because it is thinner. It also uses AUS-10 steel, which I have been impressed with so far.

The Rookie is also a good choice.

And of course you can't go wrong with the dragonfly if you want a smaller knife, although I really prefer the Mouse in this size range.

Do you think the rookie in plain or spyder edge would be better?

I would also recommend the Mouse. It is one of the smaller knives on the market, but it is really a 4" Military in disguise. What an amazing design!

My other suggestion, if you want something different, would be to get a SpyderCard and have that engraved. Discrete, elegant, and effective.

I am partial to plainedge myself. I feel that plain edge is more versatile. Read the FAQ on serrated vs. plain edge if you get a chance, very informative.

Go plain. I like the serrated too, but for everyday use, I think that plain is way more versatile.
Good Luck,
Matt
