So, after a day of surprises followed by surprises, my wife kidnaps me, takes me to the knife counter at Sportsman's Warehouse, and forces me to pick out a knife.

Oh, gawd, the pressure!

Well, I've been looking for a Case XX Pocket Hunter for some time, and they had one, in "Pocket Worn" Harvest Orange Bone.

This was a pattern I'd originally spurned, because the name, considering its size, seemed absurd. It was only after getting a full-sized Folding Hunter earlier this year that I finally "got it" with that pattern, and sought the pocket version.

Here's the big one (alongside a Buck 110 for size):

And, as you can see, the Folding Hunter is an eminently practical pattern, if somewhat large for daily carry in an office environment.

I've been carrying a Case Peanut as EDC for some months now, and I've grown to like it. The only thing about the Peanut that I've found awkward is the fact that the pen blade has its nail nick on the opposite side from the main blade so you have to use a different grip to open it and, being a shorter blade, its spring has more leverage, making it slightly stiffer to open. It's not a big deal, but noticeable.

Today, finally, I got my hands on the Pocket Hunter, a scaled-down version of the Folding Hunter pictured above.

And the Pocket Hunter I got looks like this:

Here's a somewhat larger image:

Notice that both nail nicks are on the same side, allowing either blade to be opened from the same grip. Notice also that the two blades are the same length: 2 1/8", being about the same length as the Peanut main blade.

The Pocket Hunter main blade is just a tad wider and a tad thicker than the Peanut main blade.

It drops into the pocket exactly like the Peanut, and carries every bit as easily. The larger secondary blade has a very useful profile -- very like a mini-sodbuster -- and complements the main clip-point blade nicely.

I took to this knife at once. It is EDC starting today.

I want to thank Steve (sm2) for putting my feet on the road to these delightful, small-but-endlessly-useful tools.

Thanks, man.

Oh, BTW, anyone know if this pattern is available in CV?

Always good to get a new knife for yer birthday...

I always thought they were kinda small until I played around with one that my wife picked up a few years ago.. Her's is a single bladed version..

The only CV in the pocket hunter that I know of is a Red Bone single blade. Enjoy.. Happy Birthday

I have always liked folding hunters and copperheads. If Case had put two blades in the red bone/CV pocket hunter, I would have already gotten one. I just prefer the two bladed knives. I like the little stag pocket hunter, but they are awfully expensive for the size.

Very knice! Being rather partial to folding hunters, even though I've pared down to two or three, I too have looked at pocket hunters not too favorably because of their size. The concept seemed at odds to me. Folding Hunter = Sturdy outdoor knife. Pocket Hunter = Ugh!? That thought process has matured though.

I had the same attitude about mini-trappers. That is, until I bought one off eBay, at the last minute, not realizing until I'd won the auction it was a mini. I'd bid on it and thought it was a full size trapper. Best mistake I ever made. That mini-trapper was just a handy and easy carrying knife that was just the right size for edc, where a full sixe trapper was often to heavy in the pocket.

I have this sneaking suspicion that the pocket hunter is much the same. Guess I might have to find out someday. I like that pocket worn look a lot too.
