Next week is my 40th birthday. I was looking for suggestions on what I should gift to myself? How about three categories, traditional folder, non-traditional folder and fixed blade. No restrictions on price and not omitting any manufacturer. Look forward to seeing what you very knowledgable folks suggest. Thanks in advance.

Could call up Chris Reeves and ask about getting a Sebenza born on your birthday. Heather is extremely nice and has been known to grant requests like this in the past. Or you could make your own design for a nice CGG Sebenza, of something special to you.

Not a specific suggestion: Are you intrigued by a specific culture or historical period? Sometimes those types of knives might not be the most "practical" purchases from an EDC or "high-end" perspective but are still something special that connects you to knife lore and lineage. [Obviously you can see I am working out some purchase logic of my own...]. For instance, I have spent a lot of time with Sikhs and I really developed an interest in kirpans but I am not a Sikh and it is not practical for me to EDC, but I want one...

As a non- traditional folder you could get a cold steel rajah 2 and mess around with it

Without any guidance or price point..... maybe a Kershaw RAM... or Hogue EX03 or EX04? As the non-tradional folder of course!

Great idea. I was a history major in college, and am still have a fascination with the American Civil War. I have been toying with the idea of having a custom maker make me a civil war period piece. This one may require some more thought and consideration. Thank you for the reminder...

Additionally thanks to everyone else who has made suggestions thus far. Some of those have been on my radar while others will be now. Let's keep this going...

Fixed blade? Bark River Little Creek? Or maybe a Fox River? Both unreal knives that you don't feel like you're trying to show off by carrying them on your belt.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have the Little Creek, was gifted one awhile back....Wasn't really thinking Bark River at the moment. I feel like it is something I can get anytime..

Get a Strider and send it to me, i'll see if it's alright ;)

Traditional folder? It's hard to beat Great Eastern Cutlery. Some of the best made, somewhat limited production folders on the market today.

Its the big 4O. Id go custom and get something thats personal to you and exactly what you want. I did the same for my 30th and am just waiting for them to be ready.

I have several GECs , and was still thinking about getting another. I completely agree with you, their knives are awesome. I was blown away when I received my frst one.

I was contemplating doing that. I have been on the fence about another fixed blade, and unsure due to lack of familiarity with makers of custom folders.

If i were you id poke about on the knife makers discussion page to visit the websites of the makers there, and take a peek to see if anything strikes your interest, decide on type of knife youd most like ie. frame lock, slip joint, liner lock and then do a search on custom *fill in the blank* and see what makers make what you like then shoot them an email about what you would like and if they can make it happen for you.

Thanks for the idea. I have been listening to your advice and am now even more unsure of what I want...too many amazing knifemakers on here...
