Has anyone worked with bison (as opposed to water buffalo) horn material for scales? How does it stabilize? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Well, years ago I was given a real bunch. I made a lot of powder horns with them. If I tried them for knife handles I was never pleased how they worked out. I'll bet there are makers here that were pleased with the results they got. Sure stinks when you grind on it.

Tried it but very fiberous. Didn't finish it. Have used the shin bone several times. Even there not a lot to work with, lot of pith and little solid bone. But man it polishes up nice, kinda a translucency with out being able to see through it if that makes sense.

I ask because I have access to a lot of material. Sounds like it's not the nicest to work with. Thanks for the input.

Got a buffalo robe up on the shelf (I named him Alejandro), got to make a pair of wooly chaps out of him for a friend. That'll be a project. See if ya can get some shin bones.
