The Nalgene Co is now going to phase out polycarbonate water bottles ! Exactly as I thought would happen. Personally I think it's mostly hysteria as no country has banned it and most scientists say more testing should be done. There are many sources of the chemical not just water bottles and who knows what the replacement will bring as far as problems. We live in a very chemically polluted world and the combination of all the chemicals is doing great harm to our immune systems as we see in the ever increasing cancer rate , allergies ,auto immune problems such as MS...If you want anything made of polycarbonate buy it now !!

Nalgene, smalgene. What we really should worry about is that fact that the box of cereals that are soooo good for you will keep in the cupboard for months and months and months and months..........

Doesn't bug me.
Maybe the kids will finally see things which are made of METAL.:)

But it's... well... it's... it's... it's a CHEMICAL! And everyone knows that chemicals are evil!

Nalgene is responding to market pressure like any good company will. Retailers and the public have asked for this and the company has responded. Whether you agree with the debate on health aspects of BP is beside the point. The company isn't being mandated to do so by government regulation they are being forced to do so by the market.

This is called good customer service or perhaps good market analysis and is a product of captitalism!

NPR had a fairly extensive interview with a research physician on this subject just the other night.
Essentially, he said that fairly low levels of this chemical have been implicated in developmental problems in infants and very young children.

Apparently, the stuff is widely-enough spread in the environment that a fairly large segment of the population tests positive for it's presence. However, we are talking "trace" amounts. The doctor admitted that there was no evidence whatever for problems with adults, especially in the concentrations that are being talked about.
The evidence for it's effect in children is not particularly strong.

He recommended that likely infants and young children should avoid plastic bottles and containers, but said that considerably more research needed to be done.

Nalgene has, and still does, make bottles out of HDPE (non-polycarbonate and foodsafe). It's what I've been using.

With all the hysteria and fear-mongering done by the press about it (whether it's a true danger or not), they have no choice but to sell something else. Stores that carry these bottles, like outdoor shops, have noticed a sharp decline in sales of plastic bottles in general, with a lot of aluminum and steel containers increasing. There's other plastic containers without B-A that are selling much better now too.

It's all marketing.

Nalgene will probably come out turning a bigger profit on this deal. Like CamelBak, they will come out with a similar BPA-free bottle and sell a boat-load to people who will replace their existing stock of bottles. I understand they were already running a new batch of colors for their HDPE line a few months ago.

We dumped our poly-acrylic bottles a few months back - the wife is pregnant and drinks water like a fish.

Especially Dihydrogen monoxide, I hate that thing.

Oh, it's the worst!

I went to REI, and the @#$$^#$@# pulled them from the shelves already. I am really starting to hate REI, pretentious snobs... Then I went to Dick's Sporting Goods and bought a bunch, hopefully, enough to last for many years. I love the polycarbs, and don't care about lab mice.

That said, if I could find a good single walled 1 liter bottle that took the same tops, and I could boil water in, such as stainless steel, that would be cool!

From what I've read, the biggest and most common source of BPA is the liners in canned food. I'm curious if there will be any changes in how they pack soup, tuna, veggies, etc.
