Leatherman sent me a replacement updated Wave for my old style one and I see that there are accessory bits for it, things one wouldn't normally have at hand. I've seen the full set for $13 shipped but I wondered if those of you who've had a chance to use them have any thoughts about how well they work on the MT's that take them.

It's a good system, has worked okay for me, but I use few of the bits at all, and those that I do, not very often. I must add, however, that when needed those few times, having the kit on hand was well worth it. Don't forget the bit extender, though. That has come in handy many times.

That's what I wondered. By the time you add the bits and extender, unless it's on your belt, how useful is it compared to proper tools in a toolbox.

For utility, nothing beats dedicated tools. When home or traveling by automobile, there is a tool kit nearby, but I'm not always home or near my vehicle when something needs to be adjusted or repaired. The Leatherman bit kit, however, can be carried in your pocket or on your belt., which means you will have useable tools with you when away from your tool box. That portability makes it useful to me, despite the compromises. You must decide what your needs may be.

I have both a natural and an all black Leatherman Charge. I have the bit kit for this tool, and carry it in an ankle pouch. I rarely need it, so it's best on my ankles, along with some spare batteries for my 123 powered lights. But I have used the bits in a pinch every so often, so I rarely ever leave home without them.

For those curious about ankle pouchs, these are what I use, one on each ankle.

I have a set for my Surge. It really handy when needed, but I'm hardly away from a tool kit. It seems that I use it the most at family events, or friends/family gatherings when someone has a malfunction, or brings something brand new that didn't know required assembly.

It's a snug fit inside the pouch, and I generally keep the leatherman inside my day bag due to the annoyance, only carrying on my hip at said events.

I have set for my Charge TTi, very useful when I travel somewhere. At home I have dedicated tools so no need for it.
