Just ordered the full EdgePro setup from accuratesharp.com. They were cheaper than Bronks because of free shipping, and it comes with a bit more stuff.

I'm hoping this slightly absurd outlay of cash will keep me from wasting money on an unnecessary stone here and a useless contraption there.

Any tips to get through the learning curve quickly?

Go slowly and be deliberate, dont run before you can walk. First try it out on full flat ground kitchen knives then go to something like a CRK 1 peice or CS SRK where or anything you have with a taper grind. You will find it much more difficult as the amount of 'flat' is significantly less and the knives can be prone to see-saw'ing if you are not careful. I have found it easier to do knives like this like a hollowf ground. i.e. go one more angle acute than you want but use the taper or hollow part of the ground as the de facto 'flat'

if it sounds a bit odd, you will see what I mean when you get to it.

It can be a bit messy if you are reprofiling a large blade and have to use the 120#&180# stones but once you get past 320# and do some paper cuts to check progress, you will be hooked.

I took a D2 utility (full flat grind) @ 61.5 Rc (Made by David Winston) to the 3000# and despite what people say about D2 not taking a mirror polish, well, the Edge Pro certainly isnt aware of it. ;)

Shmackey..

Sheesh! I hope you don't think I am stalking you :D

First you cause me to get an Ocelot, and now, because I am also thinking of getting an Edge Pro, I wander over here to see what I can see, and lo, I find you have beaten me to the punch on that too.

Please, post a review or at least a summary of your experiences with it as a newbie user.

I am actually very happy with my Sharpmaker, but I have a couple of knives I just can't seem to get sharp with it, thus the search for an even better solution.

Anyway, I would sure appreciate knowing how the Edge Pro works for you.

Chuck

Hey Chuck,

I too like the Sharpmaker a lot, but it's just absurd to try to reprofile thick edges with it. I have a very coarse waterstone for that purpose, but I want more control over my angles. There's something about a big, pretty bevel.

I'll let you know how it goes. I figure maybe they'll ship it tomorrow (not today, Thanksgiving) and I'll have it middle of next week.

Argh. Ordered this on a Wednesday night, and supposedly it shipped the following Wednesday. Tracking info just says a label was created. I understand that last Thursday doesn't count, but still... No EdgePro for the weekend (two weekends afer I ordered it).

What Temper said! Watch the video that comes with it and you'll be a sharpening pro in no time. :D
My EdgePro is the best sharpening investment I'll ever make!

A lot of people love their edge pro's but most mention that grit from the stones can collect on the knife holder so if your knife is more than a basic "user," a bit of masking tape on your blade can help keep you from scratching up the sides of it.

I got mine from Bronks in 3 days.....best price ain't always the answer.

I've reprofiled and sharpened both a Grip and a Mini-Grip, both in D2 steels (Cabela's) and they are insanely sharp. The polished edge is truly "mirror-like" and all of this done with the Edge Pro.

Just follow everyone's advice and watch the video several times. You'll pick up on things that you missed on the first viewings. As a last resort, you can always call Edge Pro as they have to be the friendliest people that I have ever dealt with.

Chuck

Just order the Edge Pro Apex, though as opposed to Schmackey, get it at http://www.bronksknifeworks.com/Edge-Pro_Knife_sharpeners.htm (read my previous note about getting mine in 3 days) Order the Number 2 Ultimate Deal.

Keep the Sharpmaker as it is a great touch up sharpener once you've gotten the "real" edge from the Edge Pro.

I own and use both. The 100+ other contraptions I have acquired over the years are now in Rumpke Mountain (our man made landfill).

Point well taken. The way the pricing worked out after shipping, I was going to pay a few bucks more to Bronks to get his sharpening pamphlet instead of the extra stone and ceramic rod from Accurate. So Accurate was the better deal (not that I'll even use the rod), but I'm a pretty impatient person and waiting almost two weeks to get something in the mail annoys me.

Use the rod, by golly its scarey how fast it puts the edge back onto a slightly dulled blade. I sharpen my CV case (17deg) and use it for carving. About every other carving session about 5-8 strokes on the rod and Whoa!~ and a big cheesy grin :D
