As I admired a Wetterlings hatchet one last time before sending it to a new home, I got to thinking about how it bites and chops way better than a lot of tools it's size. And then I started wondering what other axes are known or famous for that.
What are your favorite bits that can really outchop everything else in their size, weight, or category?
Mine is the aforementioned Wetterlings, a Large Hunters Axe (which is actually a large hatchet.) I recently took two "city boy" friends camping. They both found old family axes to bring to the woods to play with, but all I brought was my Wetterlings. We found an area of standing dead wood and decided to have a chop-off, see who could fell a tree faster. They decided to tag team a pine that was maybe 10" in diameter. I picked one that was around 8".
Needless to say, their tree fell about 5 minutes after mine. Now, I definitely know my way around an axe better than either of them. But I seriously doubt that solely accounts for my axe beating two full sized felling axes. I think this hatchet just really likes to chew through wood.
