Been looking for a SFNO for a while to finish out my knife "collection". I say collection in quotes because I was actually looking for users but I have more than a couple other Busse/kin now so I guess it's a collection of users.. Always figured I'd be done amassing when I found a SFNO. Well, a SFNOLE popped up on ebay and the user said it was "NEW", although the pics were a little blurry, so I did the buy it now and paid immediately so it wouldn't escape. A day later the user marked it as shipped an all is well. Until a week later and I still don't have a knife. I send the user 2 different messages on 2 different days asking for tracking information which is promptly ignored. No comms from the user at all until I open a ebay case then the guy shows back up, says he mistakenly marked it as shipped a day after the sale and that he would ship today Priority Insured w/SigConf. I see he added a tracking number so I closed the case even though the tracking number didn't work that day. Figured it would work the next morning. Which it didn't. Turns out the guy only got Sig Conf which isn't trackable. He didn't fess up immediately until I stayed on him about a tracking number. I was very blunt about it and he didn't like that I said he operated like a scammer.

So.. I had to wait until it either showed up or didn't. It finally shows up a day after he guaranteed me it would after really shipping it and I immediately let him know. Then I get to work and open it up and it's got a layer of film on it that makes it look dingy and I could already see the small rust pits underneath it. A non knifenut on the other side of the room asked me what all the stains were from.. I clean it up in my office with WD-40 to get the grime layer off and some of the rust but you could still see where most of it was. I tell the guy about the issues and then the fun really starts. He tells me he took hires pics of it at the PO right before he sent it because I came across like someone who would pretend the item didn't arrive and that I was lying. I then opened up another ebay case for item incorrectly described and offered him a solution of either send $50 back for the cleanup or a full refund and I'd send the knife back. He then writes up a big thing about how WD-40 is known to stain metal and that the knife was now chemically altered so it wasn't the same thing anymore. I then took some pictures that showed the issues (pics below) but they were of course after I got the majority of the rust and film off of it. He then says that it's buyers remorse and that it was perfect before he sent it. I then ask that he post his "Hi res" pictures which would only help my case as they would show how bad it was before he shipped to me. His pictures miraculously disappeared at that point. His solution was that we were going to have to disagree and leave each other good rep. I didn't see it that way so I left an honest and accurate red for him. He promised to give me a red if I did him earlier but in the end left me a green and said I was a great buyer? OK. Either way there was no way in hell he was getting the SFNOLE back after I did all the work cleaning it up so I closed the not as described case and told him I would use the option he didn't list, leaving him red rep and letting the cards fall where they may on my return rep. Only red rep I've ever left anyone on ebay IIRC.
Epic. But finally done. I'm sure I probably left some stuff out or in the wrong order but you get the gist of it..

So.. my collection ended on a goofy note but I got the knife I wanted, although I would have preferred a coated one, and now I don't have to refresh the Busse for Sale page 50 times a day anymore.

Here's the pics after I cleaned it up the first time but stopped before getting all the rust/schmootz off of it.

You can see the rust that is right on the edge here after I got most of it off.

Notice the scratches on this side, I told the guy I wasn't counting them as they were probably caused by the cardboard sheath.

The stuff you can see here was part of the filmy residue on it. Came off with some elbow grease and WD-40 for the most part.

At this point I cleaned it up the rest of the way using toothpaste to get the remaining rust off and now it's beautiful again. Every time I use it I will think of the idiot who sold it to me but it's a different knife now from when I received it so bully for me. Just needs pants now. Deciding on what color Kydex I want Paw Paw to do it in.. Leaning towards desert digi..

Sorry for the long post, I'm just glad to be done dealing with the seller. Am I too picky about a satin knife advertised as NEW? Would you have said something after receiving a rusty New knife?

Beautiful knife--Congrats!
I had No. 236 SFNOLE & sold it a while back cause it was too purty to use--All my knives are users.
There's definitely a lot of characters on Ebay who have different ideas on "condition" than we do on BF.
Enjoy Brother!

I'd like to know who the seller was so I can stay clear of him. People like this ruin it for the honest good people out there.

Just curious, what was the seller's feedback score on ebay before you left your feedback?

Users name was lilly_paul1 out of Oregon IIRC but he hadn't sold anything in 2 years and most of his feedback was as a buyer, not a seller. He only had a total of 26 before I left feedback. The one other time he sold something the feedback response was "As described, more or less, buyer happy" so apparently they misrepped that too.

Ouch bro I feel your pain!! I received my fbm le like that with some pitting:( saddens me wheni see it

But really your done collecting? Theres always more beautiful busse to buy!@!

So what he meant was that knife was new and un-used...except its all scratch up with rust spots...how convenient. Reason why his pics were blurry. Some folks just wanna be too slick...and not only on Ebay. ;) I think you need an alternate ending to this sory. Hopefully we can make that happen for ya Greg. :)

What a tale, Greg! You really worked for that SF, and hope it remains a prized possession. Have you ( or anyone here ), tried Simple Green to clean knife metal? I have used it successfully on micarta and G10 handles. Cheers, Steve.

OilMan! So sorry to hear you had to go through all that!

And thank you for posting the warning!!!

The good thing is she is still gorgeous!! Love that Tigerhide!!!
I'd try a very fine rubbing compound like Mother's Mag Polish and see how that does at shining her up.

LOL.. So I get a message today from putz saying that he kept his word and didn't RED me on ebay. Then he goes on to say how I'm a big meany with no friends. :-( AND.. that he doesn't know what is wrong with my hand in the pictures but he will pray for me. :-)

1) I take buying/selling/trading knives seriously and don't have a lot of patience with people who don't. So YES, I told him he was acting like a SCAMMER and I stand behind it.
2) From what I've read it's hard to RED a buyer on ebay although I don't know it for fact. What I would ASSUME is he tried and it wouldn't let him. So ebay kept him honest..
3) Must be talking about my nail cut short. I'm adding that to my list of people who you should never trust in a Busse deal. Now I know.
4) Odd that he would make fun of my ACTUAL picture proof when his FICTIONAL proof never showed up.
5) Not odd that he would take the ad hominem route, people with no facts to back them up seem to like that.

Anywho, gonna direct him here and maybe you all can all get learnt on how WD-40 chemically changes and stains INFI. Or how I made it spot rust in the 1 - 2 days I had the knife before my clear pics were taken. Or how I'm a big meany after you mark an item shipped but don't really ship or reply to any comms until an ebay case is opened up on you a week and a half later. Or how New means, like Steve said, scratched up and rusty. Heck, maybe he'll post the original pics from the ad that were just blurry enough to not be able to see the issues until you knew where to look and what to look for, OR the mysterious "HI RES" pics he took at the post office in case I tried to pull a fast one on him.

Mods, if this gets too GB&Uy feel free to move it. It didn't really start out that way.

I agree, the seller should have accurately described the condition of the knife, however those rust spots don't look too bad. If you have a drill press, pic up a small buffing wheel and buffing compound at your local hardware store that will compatible with it. I have a Bark River Aurora in 3v that I put away without wiping my greasy finger prints from and got similar rust spots on the spine. It cleaned up real quick using the buffing wheel!

I SAY that now as I think I've amassed about as good of knives as a person can... but we'll see. :-)

Those pics were taken after I already did the initial cleanup and I did get most of it off so you are correct. You shouldn't have to clean multiple rust and other stains off of a knife sold as new though. It didn't come from Busse like that. Especially at that price.

I'm with you on that, I would have been ticked off too if I purchased a knife listed as new and it arrived in that condition. I just wanted to give you a tip on how to clean up the rest of it quick and easy.

Oh man, I picked one up off tooth and nail if i remember correctly... (sorry if i didn't) and it wasn't that long ago. Number 99 of 300. It is a beautiful knife and it is amongst my favorites thus far. when i received it it had a few kydex scuffs on it but hell I didn't care. I think that i would feel the same way you did if it showed up rusty and covered in goo, and I think you were in the right to do what you did. In the end as long as your happy with what you have then that's all that matters.
