Gentlemen it has been a bit since I last posted. I hope all is well around here.

I was wondering if any of you have ever come across a hammock (jungle type) that can double as a bivy sack for when you get above the tree line.

If you have, what do you recommend? Have any of you tried one?

The clark jungle hammock has a zip-in liner that could make it serve as a makeshift bivvy. Most hammocks are wide enough to wrap completely around your body, so they could in theory be wrapped up and fastened in place.

One problem with the hammock-as-a-bivvy idea is that hammocks are usually made from non-waterproof fabric, so they will breathe as much as possible. A waterproof hammock will make you sweat like crazy in anything but really cold weather.

That said, a lot of people WILL pitch a hammock with a bugnet on the ground, as a bug bivvy, and then put their tarp over top. You can pitch this way with just some stakes and a pair of trekking poles. Hennessey has some pictures of this sort of pitch on their website, but you can do it with any hammock that has a bugnet.

The Clark Jungle hammocks will set up as a bivvy. I have used tywo of their hammocks the first being the Tropical model and my current user being the Camo North American. No problem at all as a bivvy as long as you use a groundsheet under it. Though they are not as good in that application as a dedicated bivvy. (Better in my opinion as they are roomier than most bivvy's, but they dont set up as tight as most bivvys in that application).

Clarks are great hammocks though. Built extra stout and USA made.
