For those that read my last post about ideas for kayaking...

(sorry no pics, the humidity surely would have destroyed the camera anyway)

I went for a 20 mile kayak trip down the Brazos River in TX last weekend. Took 3 days and 2 nights. I went with 2 other friends and I ALWAYS start the fire as I am known as the "fireman" of camping. We had 50 mph wind gusts this weekend so I had to get creative with the fire and my BK-09.

First, I used the BK-09 to dig a large deep hole. I had to cut through many roots for this. Next, I had to cut many long branches for a wind break over this hole. This took about 15 two feet logs. Then, I had to cut all the firewood with the BK-09. I cut nothing but Mesquite (in TX, tree is considered a weed that grows into trees--everyone hates it so I didn't feel bad cutting live Mesquite trees down). Mesquite wood is VERY hard. I cut about 50 logs or so ranging from 1" to 5" in diameter with NO problems. I was very impressed that the BK-09 kept its edge. Never had to sharpen the blade.

Being that we stayed for two nights in two different places, the process was done twice over. Glad I had that knife with me. Got down to 32F the first night!!

Money spent on a BK-09 is money WELL SPENT. Thanks for reading and thanks to Mr. Becker for designing this perfectly made knife! :D

Really cool! Rather than digging with the knife, did you consider making a digging stick? Sounds like you didn't need to worry about the edge anyway but it's a thought.

Digging stick is a good idea maybe.

Yup, too much mesquite around here. The 130,000 square miles of land that is burning around me currently might be a good thing.

Sounds like a great time. Hopefully you cooked something over that mesquite. A little off topic, but I use hickory, and add some mesquite when smoking a brisket. Good stuff.

Hey Bush-Haus......
Thanks for the post.....Mesquite IS some hard damn wood !!!!.....That much chopping is too much work!!!!LOL.........Glad that you had an enjoyable trip.......

All Best....

You're going to have to get yourself a waterproof camera!

Was there any doubt the BK9 would serve you well? Heck No!

When I used to live in TX, we joked that any trees you saw in someones yard had to be imported.

I used to cut up Mesquite, soak it in water and then put it in my grill to smoke meat. Mmmmm.

I did think of that, but I was having so much fun with the knife, I didn't want to put it down and use a stick. I figured if the mesquite wasn't dulling the blade, the sand surely wouldn't have much impact on the edge. Good opportunity to knock some rust off! Thanks very much for the suggestion though. It's a good one!

We did a LOT of boiling water for MRE's, and cooked up a lot of hotdogs. After 15 miles of rowing in one day, that hotdogs were REALLY good!
