My bk-10 finally came! I bought this knife with the specific intention of whoring this knife around. I have had knives before such as spydercos but when i get them i am too hesitant to use them for a dumb fear of "messing them up" or "getting them dirty" or "getting them scratched up." I mean what use is a knife if you are going to baby them and not going to use them? So I went to the opposite extreme and bought the most durable knife I know of based on reviews. I was torn between the bk2 and the bk10 but i chose the bk10 cause its also is a fighting knife. Relative to the BK-2, I liked the extended index finger thrust protection and I like the thumb jimp at the top of the blade for precision work. So my bk10 arrived and i am going to abuse this knife. I think the more I abuse a knife the more I like the knife.

Here is my bk10 next to my 1221 that I bought years ago. i remember using the 1221 once to cut open a soda can and the knife scatched. My soul got scratched along with it and I never really used it again for fear of it getting more scratched up. How lame!

.
The first step was to add grip to this slippery handle. The grip of my choice was glock tape.

More tape added!

Finally gunned up my knife! I was satisfied with the great grip the tape provided.

The BK-10's first test!

I was sad to see that the blade faltered to the above test. If the blade cracks up to the tiny amount of work i put it through I am not sure that it could take the whoring I had in mind. I just totally want to wreck everything. Maybe this comes from years and years of my safe queening all of my knives! I finally have a knife i just want to have fun with and im going to go totally berserk! You just don't understand!

Congrats on the new steel. The 10 is an awesome blade. That imperfection you've circled should come out with one or two passes over a sharpening stone. i wouldn't worry, your 10 will be around for many years to come. These knives were designed for work, they are tools.

i plan on abusing the bk10 to the upteenth power! the bk10 and I will be a walking path of destruction! destroying every scrap wood, abandoned structures, and broken down appliances in it's way!

i also kinda feel like i got screwed over. i've read lots of reviews that say the sheath dullens the blade significantly every time you unsheath the knife. i looked all over for aftermarket sheaths and could not really find anything i like; there are not too many aftermarket sheaths for this knife.

Dearest OP, congratulations on your first becker! The 10 is a blade I'd really like to have some day.

You listed some good reasons for wanting the 10 like the finger guard and thumb ramp, but when I think path of destruction (especially if it involves appliances) I think of the bk2. This could be worth considering to add to your collection.

What kind of sheath does your 10 have? If it is nylon with a plastic insert for the blade it should be very similar to what came with my 9 and 2 and 16. I've had zero issues. The only complaints with dulling that I read about with sheaths was the hard, glass reinforced nylon that the bk2 came in. I think that issue was addressed in the last year, though.

That's what a return policy is for if you somehow got "screwed over"

Good choice! I really like the BK10. Have fun beating the snot out of it!

I always thought the handles were just fine in use, but if they seem slippery to you and if your grip tape gets uncomfortable or causes hot spots with use, you may want to try fitting a section of bicycle inner-tube over the handle.

As far as the sheath goes, you may have confused the BK10's sheath with the OLD fiberglass reinforced nylon sheaths used for the BK2's years ago. Don't worry. The regular nylon sheath with the plastic insert will not dull your knife. There are all kinds of custom makers making sheaths for Becker knives. 710 custom sheaths, Trailbum (northeastkydex1), Dexwithers (coyle outdoors), kelley custom leather, etc... The Spec ops combat master also works well. You may need to modify the plastic insert to work for the thumb ramp, but after that you should be good to go.

i totally want a bk2. if i ever get to that then i will leave kabar and move on to a different brand such as SOG or strider.

the sheath i have is a polyester sheath with some kind of plasticy insert to hold the blade. it is the sheath on the left. sometimes when i pull out the blade i can see some plastic flakes all over the blade.

yeah i think i am confusing the fiberglass nylon sheaths with the current one i am using. that is good news!

That sheath is fine. I thought you wanted to destroy buildings and $h!t, so why care what sheath you use... You got a hell of a knife for a hell of a price. If you don't like Beckers, SOG will be happy to take your money.

i do want to destroy buildings and wood.

make no mistake that i do not want to destroy my sheath.

So any factory edge thats belt sharpend can have a little softer steel at the edge that will wear off with use, or come off with a proper sharpening.
The little roll in the edge looks to me like a couple passes on a stone will clear it up and likely totally stop it from happening again. Its the friction generated heat from the final edge that can do it, and its normally a very very small amount of metal thats affected.

interesting indeed

came back today to the bush and tested out my bk-10 for the second day.

the bush! say cheeeese!

the second picture is 150 wacks later from the previous picture

the result of the 150 incremented wacks is an even further damaged blade.

conclusions: not only did the blade's effectiveness disappoint me, but the blade material itself was kind of disappointing as you can see from the chipped blade.

i predict a lifetime blade of 12400 wacks (50 X 16 = 2400)

i arrived at this conclusion by dividing the displacement of the chip by the length of the blade laterally as illustrated below:

i forgot to take into consideration that half of the blade is more than twice that of the other half of the blade. so in effect, this bk-10 has an effective half-life of 2400+150 wacks total

don't get me wrong. i am rooting for the bk-10 but objective scientific criteria absolutely must be taken into consideration. so far the bk-10 is failing me. it failed to cut through a piece of wood in 150 wacks. :(

in english: the knife may or may not withstand the whoring i dish out!
